JBL Cinema 3722/4722 vs QSC KW-153 active speakers for HT

6700 Views 35 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Electric_Haggis
Hello forum friends,

I am brainstorming regarding speakers for a new HT (around 3500 cubic feet) and planning to use pro gear behind a false wall.

Which would you guys prefer for LCR between:

(1) JBL 3722n (or 4722n) (2 way passive, powered by crown xls drivecore 2000 amps)

or

(2) QSC KW153s (active 3 way, 1000 watts)

Max output is almost the same - 135/136 dbs.

The JBLs have a larger horn but the QSCs have DSP - not sure which would be better. The JBLs are super sensitive and I am not sure about the QSCs; I guess there is no sensitivity rating as they are active speakers

I have read several threads related to each of these two lines of speakers, but I don't recall seeing any comparisons between JBL pro stuff and active speakers, such as QSC, Electro Voice or JBL PRX series.

I thought the KW line from QSC was designed for DJ purposes as they are based off of the K series?

What about QSC's DCS line?
The QSC DCS series are passive so they seem substantially equivalent to corresponding JBL pro and Klipsch pro offerings.

The KW153 uses the same drivers as the QSC DCS-2150, as I understand it.
I had JBL pro 4675c vs K10's at one time and the JBL's were much better all around. The K10's sound good but they could fit inside the horn easily of the huge JBL's. The 4722n would give any speaker a run especially for theater.

Thank you, MKtheater. I know you have traveled a long and winding road with respect to LCRs so appreciate your insight. May I ask why you replaced your 4675c and what you replaced them with?
Get the 4722N. Or the 3722n as second choice. Theses speakers are absolutely incredible for movies and at there price I can't think of anything that would top them for HT use

I needed space and went with dual stacked DR-250's.
I just got a call from a cinema installer I had contact with before and he gave me an offer I couldn't refuse on 3 JBL 4722Ns so I bought them! Driving my F-150 to Oklahoma Saturday to pick them up!! I'm ecstatic!!

Will do!! I'll take some pics of the warehouse I'm picking them up at on Saturday as well.
To the OP, either choice would serve you well.

If you perform a quick AVS search for QSC KW series, you'll find some good discussions regarding those. The JBLs are high value/high performance too. At the same price, I'd likely get the JBLs, the more you could save by getting the QSCs, then that tilts things that way IMO. Seriously, either way, you'll be fine.

Got my 4722s. Different horn than what comes with the 4722s tho. Got a couple old school Crowns thrown in the deal too.

What horn and CD are those? Make sure it has at least the same upgraded CD.
It doesn't. Was getting ready to type that but got busy. Only the cab is from the 4722. When I got there we tried out the 4722 horns and CDs and one of them sounded crackily so he had another trio of JBLs and we took the horns and CDs off those and put them on the 4722 cabs and they all sounded awesome!! I'm not sure what horn and CDs they are tho cause the labels aren't on them. I didn't think they looked like JBLs but they sounded just like our better than the 4722 horns and CDs. He gave me a discount

CD is huge. 6in across is measures. I'll live with them for awhile and if there's any crossover problems with this CD with the crossover that's on the cabs I'll get the original matching 4722 horn and CD used somewhere.

I wonder if they are the 4670D tops. My CD for my 4675 was bigger though but maybe mine were older. Any numbers on them?
What size is the throat or the part of the CD that attaches to the horn?
Ya no numbers on them. Think the the throat is 2 inches
The compression drivers appear to be P Audio, but uncertain.
