JBL L8400P ? Anyone?!

4853 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  SimpleSetup
Stopped by my local Tweeter today to lust over some 1080p and saw that they had the JBL L8400P subwoofer for only $999 (they claim retail is $1999). Knowing that JBL's "new" L line meant some serious quality and the fact that I was looking to replace my current Athena P-300 8" sub...I was immediatly interested. It sounded great in the store, so I quickly ran home to hop on these forums and see what others had to say about these speakers....but a search for 'L8400P' comes up with nothing? Eh?

Does anyone have this sub? Know anyone that has it? Ever even heard of it or know anything about it?

I'm not about to make a purchase until I can get some kind of feedback on these. Is there another sub that is MAX $999 that you would recommend?

Most of the members here will point you in the direction of HSU or SVS. JBL's aren't known for high deep bass output. At the $1000.00 price point I think there are better choices.

The 8400 has a 12 inch driver .... It is on eBay for $599... but it does not appear to be anything unusual ...

Here are some specs ...

"Video-shielded in order to be able to be used safely with all of your other home theater equipment

RMS power handling: 600 watts

Peak power handling: 1200 watts

12" PolyPlas cone with rubber surround woofer

Frequency response: 22-150Hz

Crossover 50-150Hz (variable)

Auto Power on/off

On/Standby top indicator light

Gold-plated 5-way binding post speaker terminals ensure secure connections

Black vinyl finish

W/H/D (with spikes): 16 1/2" x 15 1/2" x 15 1/2"

Basically, it is a rather small reflex subwoofer. For $599, I would suggest SVS, Hsu, Aperion, etc ...

For $999 ... Yikes !

Thank guys.

This will pretty much be for 95% movies. Any specific subs I should look for around the $600ish price range?
FWIW I owned a jbl sub before I knew any better, the e250p, which i believe would be almost identical to this one minus some power and a touch less extention. Please learn from my mistake.

If you notice jbl doesn't list any +/- point for the frequency response, this is because the sub will run out of juice around 30hz just like the e250p's -6db at 32hz and took a HUGE nosedive after that (hardly any output in the 20s).

If you want a sub that'll shake the walls with boomy unarticulate bass then jbl has what you are looking 4. ;)

Spend your hard earned money on a quality product from aci, axiom, hsu, onix, svs, velodyne etc.... or give DIY a try.

Just my 2 coins. Good luck with your decision. :)

Hey Jr, in my opinion I think that is an unfair comparison of the E250P and JBL L Series sub. A better comparison would probably be the S120PII which is from the older Studio S series. I have heard both the E250P and the L8400P and hte L8400P kicked the butt out of the E250P. Keep in mind the E250P can now be had for only $150 at Frys, so it really is not a good comparison.
LOL I had a JBL PB12 for 5 years and blew it on my first viewing of WOTW. Nuff said Go DIY or SVS/HSU.

Yes I'm sure it's an improvement but in what aspect? Was it more articulate or just louder? I'm sure the 8400 is a "fine" product but at 6-900$ there are better subs to be had especially at this price point. Yes you are right it is more like the 120 and I know this isn't a perfect comparison it's just stating that jbl subs aren't that good. ;)

For around 600 I'd get on the bstock waiting list for a vtf3 from hsu or find out how that new nsd driver sounds from svs.(the usual suggestions)

JR
So the SVS's are huge....and I mean damnnnnn. So they're out of the question.

The HSU's aren't the prettiest things to look at, but they sound like an excellent value. So which one? Trying to keep under $600, would the VTF-2 MK 2 ($499) or the STF-3 ($599) be a better sub? And what's the difference between the VTF and STF line? Thanks.
Take a look at the Outlaw Audio LFM-1 and LFM-2

The VTF series comes with a tuning option. These subs are linear down to 20hz, but if you want more output you can elect to go with a 25hz tune. Keep in mind that you can get reasonably good extension down to 16hz on the VTF3 in the lower tuning mode. The STF series now offers a tuning option that you can purchase separately from HSU.

What about a Velodyne DLS-3750? I just listened to one at the local Tweeter and was very impressed for only $499. Anyone know anything about them?
Well, due to the overwhelming support of the 3750 I got after my last post (j/k :) ), I ended up picking one up for $399 locally. I have to say that it is equally impressive in my house as it was on the demo floor. The small form factor fits my living room and the sound fits my taste.

thanks :)

here it is (yes, I know my center is in a horrible spot...but I don't really have a choice except to turn it off when I need to)

Look at the February/March issue of Sound & Vision and it might give you a hint of what it is like.
