I have been hunting for a new sub for my car.

A couple car-audio friends/nuts, and my local mid-fi home & car audio dealer, really like the JL Audio drivers.


Would any of the JL Audio drivers, specifically the 13W7 or 13W6v2, be suitable for a DIY home theatre sub ?

First off try plugging a 13w7 directly into a wall outlet. Its pretty amazing because it can take the direct power. I sell w7's and the 13"w7 has dual 1.5ohm voice coils so good luck trying to find a home audio amp, onyl JL audio amps work well for that. The w6v2 is 4 ohm, so find a good 400 rms stable at 4 ohms and you sure could. Awesome subs by the way.

Not entirely sure on the cost, but if the W7 is more than $500 the Adire Tumult would be a much better option for home use. Both for output capability and for having an ohm load typical home/pro amps can drive easily.


If you haven't seen them you may also want to look at the Adire Brahma for car use. Just as potent, if not more potent than the JL's top stuff and cheaper.

I second Dustin's recommendation. For car use, the Brahma is the equal or better of the JL W7 at less cost. For home use, the W7 just isn't in its element, as its T/S specs are really not well suited for home applications, not to mention how expensive it is for the displacement provided.


The Adire Tumult has specs more appropriate for home use, is half the cost, provides more displacement, is more efficient, is more linear and produces less distortion. A no brainer. Another good option for a high quality home audio subwoofer driver is the Stryke (now known as Acoustic Elegance) AV15. Less displacement and less linear than the Tumult, but a much better displacement/cost ratio.
