Okay so I need to build a JP-1 cable. I am away at college so my parts bin is not available. I am wondering if everything that is need to build one, including the 6-pin connector can be bought at the local radioshack?

Radio Shack is not exactly the best place to go shopping for these parts. For starters, they won't have the 6-hole IDC connector, so you'll need to buy a larger connector (like the ones used for hard drive cables) and cut it down. Also, they won't have the Schottky diode, so you'll have to make do with a signal diode, which is a bad idea if you want to use the cable with a laptop. They will probably have the rest of the parts though.

A better idea would be to get them from somewhere like http://www.mouser.com You could make things easy for yourself and buy the parts as a "kit" for $9 from http://www.hovisdirect.com he also has completed cables on sale for $14 shipped. Another place to get completed cables is http://jp1.filebug.com

A better place to ask JP1 questions is the JP1 forum:

Definitly buy the cable. It is cheap . JP! is wonderful for remotes. I have been using a radio shack 15-1994 and it controls everything I need after a little work. If you have any questions getting started programming, PM Me
