A friend of mine likes my Pioneer VSX 9500S. He went on flea bay and found a VSX 9700. The problem is it doesn't have the jumper bars in the back for the audio pre-outs. I have heard that if they aren't in place the receiver won't play music unless an external amp is attached in the pre-out spots. Any truth to this? He doesn't want to purchase a receiver that he can't use without an amp.

As lovinthehd said - just use a pair of very short RCA cables. Or saw the head off any nail that will fit the holes and bend into a 'u' shape to fit. All that jumper is is a solid piece of steel bar.

You are correct, it requires something connecting the two. The easiest fix is just use a set of RCA cables, like the ones to a CD player, and connect the in and outs together, as was said above. That will work just as well.
