Just bought my first D-VHS deck, now need tapes (D-Theater & Otherwise)

I finally bought a D-VHS machine and am awaiting delivery. I am connecting it to my LG LST-3410A HD Recorder and hope to be able to time shift the world series (Although this will be hard if they have many 14 inning outings - I can see the tape running out 30 seconds before the winning home run).

My main reason for getting the deck is to time shift broadcasts, but I would also like to get some recorded material. My first thought was that I'd like to buy D-Theater tapes, but they cost a lot and I don't feel like owning most of them. My next thought tp wonder if there is a lending library of HD tapes.

What I am looking for is a source for recorded HD material that I can borrow. Others surely have had the thought - "where can I rent some of these D-Theater tapes?" Is there a source for renting these tapes? Is there a 'club' for lending the tapes between members? If such a club does not exist, is anybody interested in forming such a club?

There was an online D-VHS tape rental business, I believe it was called NicheFlix but I never used it and don't know if it still exists. I am sure no discussion of a lending club of D-VHS recordings is allowed on this forum.

Chris
Nicheflix is alive and well. I've been a subscriber for several months. Their D-Theater tapes are in good shape (I've only had one problem title in 25 or so).

Discussion of tape trading is not allowed here.

Chris & Dylan -

I'm sorry, I didn't know it was not allowed. Is lending of D-Theater tapes actually illegal? You can lend books (hence the phrase lending library), so I assumed you could lend D-Theater tapes. It seems to me that there are too many gray areas in this game.

I'll check out Nicheflix - thanks for the tip.
Hyrax - The idea is that for most other types of media, "lending" is analogous to piracy (people making illegitimate copies and keeping them). However, given the copy protection in a D-Theater tape, you are probably on the safe side of the spirit of the law. However, you will probably not find a lot of sympathy if you start posting on one. Talk to Alan Gouger about whether he would allow it.

Beyond NicheFlix, I thought I saw an ad for a service in the back of a Widescreen Review magazine I picked up once. I don't subscribe, so I can't remember the name of the service. Oh, well!

Bill

PS: Besides, acquisition is so much more rewarding! ;)

I'm mainly concerned that so many of the D-Theater tapes are out of print, hard to get, or expensive. I was hoping to find a source for them. Nicheflix looks exactly like what I was looking for.

I also really want to see the last few Super Bowls in Hi Def. If anybody knows who I could contact in order to get them put on tape, I'd like to hear it. I sent an email to NFL Films requesting they put their stuff out on D-Theater tapes, but I was wondering if there would be a better way.

I know what you mean. I might have found a place in The Netherlands that has a copy of "The Bourne Identity". Eu50, of course. yikes!

Even if this discussion is limited to D-Theater tapes?

There should be no grey area here. You can lend a *purchased* item to anybody! That includes books, CDs and tapes. The copyright law exists to keep you from copying (ie protect the rights of the authors).

A D-Theater tape is (currently) uncopyable. You have the legal right to loan, sell, or trade a D-Theater D-VHS tape. So for all intents and purposes this should be an allowed topic.

OTOH, I imagine that "tape trading" in a forum like this could quickly devolve to trading *recordings*. IE, "I'll trade you an HBO Star Wars: AotC for a HDNet Fearless!" This would be illegal.

The real nail in the coffin, however, is that there's no "Buy/Sell/Trade" forum! :)

You are of course forgetting the "analog hole" that Hollywood is concernded about. A W-VHS VCR can make an analog copy although media costs make that idiotic.

Chris
Tape trading of non-DTheater is what's not allowed.

That middle link towards the top that says "HT Marketplace" - you may want to give it a try. :)
Sorry if I wasn't clear in my first message. When I said I was looking for a lending library of HD tapes, I meant D-Theater tapes.

Also, I wasn't trying to use this forum as a front end for trading D-Theater tapes . Rather, I was/am interested in information about borrowing/renting these tapes without having to buy them. I was also wondering if there was much interest by others in pooling our resources in order to make D-Theater tapes easier to get (even if it means just borrowing/renting the tape). This is obviously a bad idea, so I've dropped it.

And on that note... You can photocopy a borrowed War and Peace too!

:)
