first off, so far I am happy with the set. It's a YX5 so i think it's a newer model. here are some initial reactions :

HDTV looks great, from what little i've seen. I got the Radio Shack indooor double-bow-tie antenna that everyone said worked great, but all i'm getting is NBC so the only real HDTV i've seen was Leno last night. It looked fantastic, absolutely perfect. So i know the TV is capable of a perfect picture. But I live 10 miles from downtown atlanta, so i thought i'd be getting more channels. Guess i'll have to get bigger antenna.

The set DOES have a good amount of compression on the right hand side of the screen with 16:9 movies, an issue a lot of owners have. I am thinking of calling an RCA tech but realize they usually can't fix this.

There also seems to be some geometry issues overall with the right hand side of the set. 2.35:1 movies' black bars get bigger the further they go on the right.

In trying to fiddle around with the sharpness, i came across a strange situation. Someone told me turning the sharpness all the way down and up one notch turns off SVM, but it looked WAY too soft. So i tried somethign on a whim - turning the sharpness all the way UP and the noise filter all the way ON. I was expecting a mess, but low and behold it looked VERY good with satellite and DVD. I know this can't be the recommened setting but it is the only setting where i can retain detail and lose the look of SVM, it really looks like it's disabled this way. If other F38310 owners can try this as a test to see if my set is screwy, let me know.

i got a JVC progressive scan player, and while i noticed some improvements (subtle color improvement and loss of some jaggies), it wasn't the huge leap i thought it was.

so overall - if i can't get any more HD channels and can't get the geometry fixed i *might* return it for another one or a refund.

To get more hd channels you really need to activate the dtv ird in the set or add the dishnet 6000 hd ird. I have both. That way you get access to all the hd feeds and ch. 199 on dtv has some outstanding hd content.

If after that you don't like it, then pay another 2 grand and move up.

For the money you won't find a better buy. Not saying it has the best picture you can buy, but for the money you can't touch it.

It would be worth a call to the place you bought it and have a teck do the computer alignment on it. I did that with mine and it helped a bunch.

if i get another dish to hook up to the tv's directv receiver (already have a dish hooked to a multiswitch , should i buy one of those antennas to hook to the dish to receive my local OTA HDTV channels?

I am pretty sure if i get the oval dish, i can replace my old dish and use the oval one for my multiswitch feeds (two directivos) and for the DirecTV hd.

I have a big outdoor antenna up in my attic so It isn't subject to storms and it works great.

If you don't want to get that then you could get one of the antennas that just mount right on the dish ands the multi-switch that comes with the new oval dish has an input for the ota antenna so you can run it in one cable. I"m not sure what type of splitter you would need inside since that is not what I am using. That would probably give you a stronger signal for your digital ota channels.
