Just got a new dell with a dvd burner. Some beginner questions: Whats the difference between the -r and +r? If you want to burn a dvd thats longer than two hours do you have to do it on two dvds it looks like most are sold in two hour formats? Thanks for any help as its hard to cut thru all the information when I do a search.

you need to check out www.dvdrhelp.com...most of your questions can be answered there.

-r and +r are two separate formats for record once disks. Both are compatible with SOME dvd players. The media cost is close to the same (gotta shop around though).

don't worry about 2 hours...its about data. A recordable disk is single layer and holds 4.7 GB; a store bought video is dual layered and hold 9.4 GB. Two hour format is usually pretty decent quality video...typically, you can compress the video and get as much as 6 hours but the quality suffers significantly.
