Just got new AVR and Speakers, need sub!

3205 Views 52 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  WLDock
Just got myself a Denon x1500 and NHT SuperZero, SuperOne's, and SuperCenter. Now I need a sub to complete my system.

Budget: $400 - I look at great deals here, slickdeals, and other deal sites daily for this stuff. I'm willing to wait for a $700 sub to sink to $399.

Room Dimensions - 18x25 - ish. Bigger than a bedroom, but on the small/medium size of a living room.

Primary Use - Mainly TV and Movies. We haven't listened to music yet on our current HT, but the new Denon works with Alexa so my wife wants to try it. I imagine if we did, we would be in another room with the volume up higher....if that matters. But mainly TV/Movies.

Listening Habits - Not high volumes. Medium to low volumes.

Some subs I was eye'ing -
Infinity R12 = $199
BOSTON ACOUSTICS ASW250 = $199
BIC America F12 = $210
BIC PL-200 = $250
Polk Audio PSW505 = $299
RSL Speedwoofer 10S = $400
ELAC Debut 2.0 SUB3010 = $449
Monolith 10" = $499
SVS SB-1000 = $499
SVS PB-1000 = $499

Or,

The RSL Speedwoofer has gotten a lot of praise, although it doesn't play very low for a ported sub.

RSL has free returns, should you try one and not like it.

That's kind of the gist I'm getting elsewhere too. But, the post above has the BIC as the avs #1 sub? "1. Editor’s Pick: Bic Acoustech PL-200 II" Sup with that? I almost pulled the trigger on it at $250.
If you can wait a couple months, there will be a pre-sale for Power Sound audio's new sub, price should be around $599. It will blow everything away in that price bracket.

ummm, care to give anymore details, other than it blowing the world away ?
From your list the Monolith THX Select is the top choice, IMO. Followed by the PB-1000. Best bet is to wait a while until Labor Day, which will spawn some sales. The Monolith has been as low as $375 and the PB-1000 is usually around $400 in the SVS outlet during their holiday sales. Both of these subs offer 20Hz performance with a linear sound. The Monolith can even be operated sealed. The other subs on your list are mostly budget subs and none of them offer much performance below 30Hz. With a $400 budget, best move is to steer clear of the budget subs. ;)

You have a big room. So SVS NSD PB 12. It often comes on sale. If you can not wait for the sale, go with at least SVS PB 2000.

You should look at HSU's VTF line.. they will rock your space and are often overlooked. They've been in business since the early 1990's Peace. --> http://www.hsuresearch.com/subwoofers.html

Sure.

Anywho, Tom will have a new Sub from $500-600 range and it will probably be the best in that price range OP. You should email PSA customer service and tell him your goals and maybe you can get in on the pre-sale.

Monolith for $375 I'm down for sure.

Unfortunately the PB2000 is above my price range. I would go for the 1000 if the price drops a bit.

Where is this info coming from? I've looked on the thread and all of their social media sites. They are working on a sealed 12" but I have not seen price or final performance claims. Here are the posts that I could find:
