Just purchased Toshiba 32HL86 - Two Questions

2808 Views 9 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Toshiba32HL86
Hi how's it going. I just purchased a Toshiba 32 inch LCD TV and I have a couple of questions. This is my first time I've purchased an LCD or a TV over 18 inches so please forgive me if my questions are stupid.

My first question is about resetting the TV's settings in menu back to factory settings. I have not been able to find a button under the menu that lets me reset all the options I've played around with back to factory settings. I know when I bought the TV I played around with the back light, contrast, lots of different settings to which I dont know how to they were first set. I cant find it in the Toshiba user manual either. If anyone knows how I can do this I would really appreciate it.

Second question is about about the quality of my cable on this TV. I bought this TV mainly for gaming on my Xbox 360. I think it looks beautiful. It's hooked up to the 360 with the component cables and I love it. I have Digital cable with Rogers and its hooked up to the TV with the NTSC ant cable. Like I've heard people say, just because you upgraded to a better TV doesnt mean your cable will look better because my 18 inch TV actually looks better because of the smaller screen size. The picture on this TV is fuzzy etc. So I was wondering, what can I do to make the quality better without having to upgrade to HD or something? Is there a different way of hooking up cable to my TV. For instance if I were to grab a cable box and hook up the TV through the cable box with the red, white, and yellow connections will it look better? Or if I use a cable box and hook up the TV with an S-video connection will it look better? I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

I recently bought the 32HL86. I have it hooked up to a Rogers HDTV box via HDMI and component (Red, Blue, Green) inputs. HDTV picture quality varies from program to program. Film based programs originally shot in HDTV and live sports look great. Standard channels look awful. Upconverted programs and video-based programs on HDTV channels are OK but look better on my 30" Samsung CRT HDTV. Have you activated the noise reduction feature (CableClear) in the picture menu ? I haven't played with it as it is only active for 480i inputs through the coaxial and S-video inputs.
I have cable hooked up through coaxial also. I have the cable clear noise reduction set to high but I'm really not sure I can see a difference. You are right, standard TV is awful. You say you have yours hooked up through an HDTV box. Does that mean you are subscribed through rogers HDTV service or that you are only using the box for a better connection to your TV?

I guess what I'm trying to say is if I used the box to connect my TV through HDMI or component instead of coaxial will I get a better standard picture?

Also do you know anything about reseting the menus options back to factory settings?
It is not a great move to be using coax between the cable box and the TV. This is the worst possible way you could have it.

For a standard box, you should be using S-video if available, otherwise composite (yellow). For an HD box, you should be using component, DVI, or HDMI.

And no, I don't know anything about your menu options. I'm surprised you don't have a "reset to defaults" choice.
But using my television without a cable box means I'm recieving an analog signal instead of digital correct?

If anyone can shed any light about reseting the menu to defaults it would be great. I still cannot find an option to do that. Thanks.
I have a HDTV subscription. When the Rogers cable box is connected via HDMI or the component inputs, the pic siz button on the remote can be toggled to stretch standard channels to fill the screen. This stretching makes the picture quality worse. The picture in natural mode with grey side bars is about the same as S-video or coaxial quality. The 4:3 HD mode is noticeably better but the original 4:3 pciture is horizontally compressed. The Toshiba video processing (deinterlacing and scaling) is supposed to be pretty good..not as good as the Sony XBR's though...so your limited by the quality of the 480i signal.

I don't know how to restore the factory settings. However, I've only tinkered with the Preference settings so my current settings for the other modes are the factory settings.

Thanks for the info, I guess I will call up rogers and have them give me a cable box so I can atleast connect it to my TV with an HDMI cable and have a digital connection.

As far as resetting to factory settings, I cant believe there is no button for it. I'll give Toshiba a call sometime to see if there is some way of doing it.
S-video, coaxial, and component inputs are all analog signals. However, the S-video and coaxial inputs are limited to 480i standard definition, while the component inputs can handle 480i, 480p (enhanced definition), 720p, and 1080i.

The lower tier channels of Rogers lineup are the so-called "analog" channels..broadcast originally in 480i. The upper tier channels are the so-called "digital" channels originally broadcast in 480p. If you connect your basic Rogers cable box via the component inputs, 480i is deinterlaced to 480p before outputting to your TV. 480p is passed through. If you connect via S-video or coaxial, 480i is passed through but 480p is downconverted to 480i so your using your TV to deinterlace 480i to 480p. The picture quality for the "digital" channels is slightly better via component but still watchable on S-video, or coaxial due to the pretty good deinterlacer on the Toshiba. However, the lower tier channels look like crap through all three inputs.
I should clarify that I was referring to the standard Rogers digital cable box in my last message. Rogers calls it digital because it gives you access to channels originally broadcast in 480p. However, the box only has analog outputs via S-video, component, or coaxial. You need to get the HDTV cable box to get HDMI digital output. There's no extra charge for the basic HDTV channels..your just paying for the box... but the HDMI will not make the non-HDTV channels look any better.
Thanks for the great info. I've taken the standard cable box from another room to test it out here. Instead of directly connecting the coaxial cable from the wall to my TV I have it hooked up to the cable box and then an S-video cable from the cable box to my TV with red/white cables for audio. I believe the image looks a bit better.

I have 6 months free of HDTV with roguers since I purchased this TV from Best buy. I think I'll give that package a shot, free HDTV and the chance to hook up cable through HDMI.

So are you saying even on standard channels or the lower tier channels, having an S-video connection wont be any different from HDMI?

Sorry I'm very new to actually caring about the quality of my TV's image. Xbox 360 gaming is a whole different story though. It's beautiful.
