Just Purchased WD-52525. Quick Question about Picture

1029 Views 24 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  sdkwan
I just pulled the trigger and bought a WD-52525 yesterday. I got it home and basically have only hooked up my DirecTv Tivo box to it currently with S-video and L&R composite audio cable. (I am waiting for my entertainment center to come in before I hook the rest of my components up.) When I go to the Play list in Tivo and look at the balls on the left side, they appear grainy or pixel like. Best way to explain this is its like having the wrong resolution or video card driver in your computer. The ball is still yellow and perfectly round but on my Sony Wega it appeared as a shiny ball with no distortion. I did switch it to different modes but all modes had the same result. Even the standard 4:3 mode didn't look good. Is this part of the problem that I have read where the SD is not as good as HD or DVD? Everything else seems good to me. It does have some glare issues as mentioned many times in other posts. Also, my eyes kinda felt like they hurt a little last night after I watched it for about 4 1/2 hours. Hopefully my eyes will adjust to watching the new tv. If it doesn't, I may have to take it back and get the Sony KDF-50WE655.

Did you change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 within the tivo's Setup menu? Also, try a different input and see if it appears the same. Then try composite video and compare.
Yes, I did change aspect from 4:3 to 16:9. I have not changed different cables yet or different inputs. I will try that when I get a chance, I am currently at work.

Extreme, do you have the 525 with directv tivo setup? If so, does the Tivo Balls in the Playlist look clear?

Hey, How do you like your 52525? I'm considering getting one.

I am loving it so far! I still have yet to get an HD signal for it. I am going to get an antenna soon. The HD Directv Tivo is out of my price range right now. They are laying cable in my neighborhood so that may be my next option. My entertainment center was delivered today, once I get a friend over to help me put my tv on it I will give you a better update. The tv has been sitting on a kitchen table so it was kind of high but I didn't notice any more glare on it as I did my 36 Sony Wega. There could be more glare on it now that I lower it, but again the glare has not bothered me yet.

I want to go check it out in the store tomorrow but I like the features it has. Man, this sounds like a sweet TV but still kinds skeptical about dropping so much cash on a TV which I have no experience w/.

Which sony Wega did you upgrade from?

I had a 32" WEGA, and it was a great TV. NTSC stuff looked great on it. The Tivo screen looked great on it. It was deisnged for a TV with just 480 pixels vertically. And interlaced, at that.

But on my WD-52525, the TV has to upconvert that 480i signal to a 720p signal. So each pixel that the tivo sends out will have to be multiplied. The WD52525 is so sharp that 480i computer-generated images can look blocky.

Turn on PIP, and I bet it will look the same as your old TV, if not better because the image is scaled down a bit. But I'd rather a big image. :)

I think that the main issue with a Tivo is that it uses s-video to output to the TV. If it used component, even for 480i signals, I bet it would look a lot better. For instance, 480i cable or antenna signals going through the internal TV tuner look great. But the tivo leaves a lot to be desired, unfortunately. :(

Shape and sdkwan,

You are right the PIP picture looks incredible. I have the 36 inch WEGA. Not sure the exact model. I got it about 4.5 years ago when they were still around 1500. The glare is a little more now that the tv is lower, but still not enough for me to take the tv back. I only notice glare in a really dark scene and even then sometimes I have to look to see it. I really like my et center, but the tv barely fits. I should have had almost an inch gap but for some reason I have like a hairline. My friend and I had to put the tv on the credenza before putting the bridge on. Anyways I am rambling...cause I love the tv.

SDKWAN it is kinda hard dropping that much cash on a tv, but I found UE had the best extended warranty in my area so I got them to price match Fry's ( I hate fry's and to be honest that is the only good thing they have done for me was quote a really good price, they screwed me on a CPU a couple of years ago.) Once I have purchased the tv the price doesn't bother me as much knowing if it breaks in 5 years I am covered + they will cover up to two bulbs. Do some more searching and just go with your gut and I am sure you will never look back.

Your eyes might hurt because of the type of display it is- DLP. I see rainbows with DLP. Do you notice them? I think the glare screen comes off.
Bill,

I do not see rainbows. My eyes are fine now with the tv. I think it only took a couple of days to adjust. The TV shoots out a lot brighter picture than my previous tv as I can see bright spots on my wall behind where I sit. I think that was part of my problem.
OK, I made my choice. I'm gonna get the Mitsu 52525. I went to about 5 different places and man it looks nice. My wife was bothered by the glare but after I told her to focus on the movie instead of the glare she agreed. The glare ready doesn't bother you as long as you're not constantly focusing on the glare. Personally, I like the concept of the protective screen on top of the display screen. Considering we're going to have a baby soon, I have a piece of mind knowing that my kid won't easily able to mess with the TV with that protective screen.

But now, this damn thing is like a diease. First, comes the Big HDTV, then the HDTV cable, then Upconversion DVD, Surround Sound Stereo. Man, all I hear is cha ching, cha ching.
Skip the upconverting DVD player. You would be amazed at how good a regular progressive DVD player looks, even the $40 special.

Save that cash for a Blu-Ray or HD DVD next year.

Hmmm... OK. I'll take your advice on the DVD player. I saw that the Samsung 841 is pretty cheap at Costco but have been reading a ton of negative things about it. It just seems too pain in the butt to be dealing with.

So whats considered a good progressive scan DVD player to compliment the 52525?
SDKwan..I am in kind of the same boat as far as dvd players. I have an old sony that was purchased back when dvd players were still $450. Mine is not progressive scan but looks pretty nice to me hooked up with component cables. I am also looking at getting a progressive scan that is less than $100 until the HD Dvds come out. If you hear what is a great player for less than $100 let me know. I hear you on it being a disease. I did purchase my surround sound system last October. I went with a Yamaha RX-V1400 (current model is RX-V1500) and I love it. I just got some mirage OmniSats all the way around for 5.1 with a Velodyne Sub. I am impressed with the quality for the size of the speakers. I had to get small satellites to make the wife happy. I am looking into digital cable as well for a HD signal, but really like my directv, and right now I don't have the $1000 for the HD Tivo after purchasing the TV. It seems like lots of people have them in this forum. I will have to wait for the price drop on these but have yet to see one. As soon as I get a DVD player and a HD Signal that has Tivo I think I am set. I agree about the protective cover on the Mitsubishi. I have some very young nieces and nephews so I think this is a total plus for me, and before long I will try to have a kid of my own. I thought the glare at the store was worse than the glare at my home. I only have two windows and a door to my backyard in my living room. The door and one window face east, and the other window faces south so early morning is really the only time natural light fills my room. I have my tv on the north wall so the glare from sunlight is not much of a factor. Depending on how many windows you have could determine how much more or less glare you may receive. Worse case scenario, purchase the tv from a store with a 30 day return policy, that should also make your wife feel better in case you get it home and she still focuses more on the glare rather than the program. Congrats on finally making a decision. It took me a while to come to one, but once I bought my et center it helped narrow my decision because only a couple tvs will fit in it.

Shaggy,

Well unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of the try b4 "really" buying. I'm getting the Mitsu 52525 dirt cheap and there's no return or exchange. So I have to make sure this is what I want. To me, when I saw it in the stores the pic quality seems better compared to the samsung 5063. I have to say, the Mitsu seemed sharper. Thats what sold me on top of the protective screen.

As for DVD players, like i said, I saw the Samsung 841 at Costco.com pretty cheap. But still not sold on it.

I might just go with a $60 progressive scan DVD player for the time being. I have an old Apex AD-600a and it seems to be dying on my now. That damn thing keep freexing up on me while watching movies.
I just have a POS Samsung DVD player from Best Buy. Doesn't even have a display on the front. It still looks gorgeous on this TV.

However, I have switched to my HT PC for playing DVDs. It does upconvert, obviously. It looks better, but it is not a mind-blowing difference.

The picture on the Mits is definitely sharper than the Samsung 63 series TVs. I'm not a big fan of wobulation. It may be a good match in the end for 1080p (I wouldn't doubt that it is), but for 720p, it just is too blurry for me.

Hi Shape, Can you elaborate on the HT PC a bit, That was something else I was considering doing. I was thinking of doing one of those sleek form factor ones.
Well, mine definitely is not sleek. :) Mine is in a full tower case.

I have an MSI K8N Neo Platinum mainboard with an AMD A64 3000+. 768MB of RAM. I have an NVidia 6600GT graphics card. HDTV Wonder. DVD Drive and 2 160GB hard drives for storage of ripped DVDs and HDTV that I capture with Windows Media Center over the air with my HDTV Wonder.

For me, 320GB isn't quite enough. I think I may add an additional 250GB of hard drive space. But only because Best Buy is giving me a $110 coupon for being a member of Reward Zone when I bought my TV.

Media Center is pretty damn cool. I'm very impressed with it.

For getting the video to the TV, I just use an RGB cable from an old monitor straight into the TV. that gives you a perfect 1:1 pixel mapping with ~zero filtering from the TV. Looks great.

Shape, So roughly how much would your HT PC set up set me back?
Well, I saved money in a few key areas, like the case and the DVD drive.

I believe my finaly tally was around $700. That included the stuff in my other post, and also a power supply.

You can build a less powerful system for a lot less, though. $200 of that was just for the video card. That is one place where you can save some money. A socket 754 motherboard can range from $50 to $105. Mine was $105. :) You can get away with a cheaper processor, too. Mine was $145.

I bet that you could slip in under $500.
