Hello everyone!

I receivevd a pair of Audioengine 5 speakers today, and wanted to share my initial impressions along with some links to photos of the new setup.

I am using these right now with my iMac/home office setup. When placing my order for these speakers, I initially was going to order them in black but chose white instead to match my iMac. Boy, am I glad I did! These speakers are simply GORGEOUS!! They are a piano gloss white with nicely contrasting black drivers. The drivers appear to be of high quality and consist of a 20mm silk soft dome tweeter and 5" kevlar woofer. The left speaker comes equipped with a built-in 45 watt (70 watts peak) per channel amplifier. This is noticed in the speakers weight with the left speaker weighing in at 14lbs while the right speaker weighs 9lbs. Although Audioengine states in their excellent manual that no break-in is required, they recommend playing at least 24-48 hrs of music at "normal" listening levels.

Upon unpacking and positioning the speakers on my desk one glaring issue was facing me: I needed to get them raised up about six to eight inches off my desk to have the tweeters at proper ear level. Although Audioengine recommends getting them on dedicated speaker stands (to which I wholeheartedly agree), that solution was totally out of the question based on the location of my desk. So, what to do? I was stumped until I noticed one of those plastic Sterilite storage containers I keep my keys and other small items in. I tried it with the left speaker (it being the heaviest), and it fit almost perfectly! Well, it was off to Walmart. I went to see if they had a pair in white.

Success!! They had about six or eight of them in stock so I snapped up two of 'em and quickly went home to set them up (well that is after a quick detour to the market for my wife
). So, about an hour or so later, I have them up and running.

Initial audio impressions: Out of the box these speakers sound great! They get the all important midrange pretty well. In fact, they rival some other larger speakers I have heard. They image well and have an airy quality to the sound. I'm sure imaging will be even better if I had them spaced further apart than I do. Bass is tight and controlled and holds up well with higher volumes. These speakers absolutely smoke just about any computer type speakers out there, and to be fair, Audioengine doesn't advertise them as being made expressly for computer use but they work extremely well in this fashion. They totally destroy my pair of Klipsch ProMedia 2.0 speakers I've been using. When time permits, I plan to set them up in place of my Definitive Technology Studio Monitor 450s to really see how they sound. They just might give the Definitives some competition although they will not go as loud without distorting.

These are my initial impressions. I plan to really see what these speakers can do next weekend when I'll have more time to evaluate them. But my out of the box impressions of them are excellent! Well worth the $350 paid for them in my opinion. Links to photos are below (Dial-up user's warning: big files!):

Hello, Hatchback.

I've been using the Audioengine 5's now for a few weeks letting them break in. My initial impressions have not changed. They play very loud and provide a very nice soundstage. I've been mostly (so far) listening to these speakers with my portable equipment which consists of my video iPod and CDs played through my computer. With my busy work schedule, I have not yet had the time to set them up for a head-to-head showdown with my Definitive Technology Studio Monitor 450's. I plan to also use them with my Sunfire True Subwoofer as well. I believe they are broken in enough now for this test and will report back soon with an update, including photos.

I like these speakers. Very much. Like I stated earlier, they play very loudly and they sound controlled at high volumes. The mid-range is excellent (gosh, I'm not intentionally trying to sound like some audio magazine reviewer...sorry) and the bass is tight and controlled. In my opinion, they do not add anything to the sound of the recording that isn't there. They sound pretty neutral to me. These speakers are perfect for a small to medium sized room. I look forward to trying them with a subwoofer which should make them sound even better since they will not have to attempt to reproduce the lower bass octaves and can concentrate more on the midrange.
