JVC 1080P, no rave reviews so far

I'm not trying to be negative or put the JVC 1080P sets down, but I'm just not hearing the rave reviews about these sets that you get from the SXRD's. Folks here get hysterical about the PQ of the SXRD and hype over the SXRD as wells as the Qualia have been insane. Even the HP DLP have their share of boasters, just not getting the same from the JVC crowd. What's up JVC'ers, lets us know about your sets, not pictures of stands, picture settings, but your some of your glowing "insane" reviews. :)

Wait until next week. Many more people will have them, including me. I had the HP so I can give an impression vs. that set. From what I've read so far, I think it should be a great TV. We will see if it is "insanely great", Mr. Jobs :p

It was just 1 week ago exactly that I saw this set at HHGregg in Atlanta area. They had only had it for THREE days and they are the ONLY ones in Metro Atlanta area that even have the set. They told me they had sold 3 sets in the first 3 days of having them but only had 8-10 sets per store to sell.

So bottom line is that JVC "may" have screwed themselves for the holiday season by not getting a lot of units to the stores BUT there have been few sets bought so far and they have only been bought in the last 2 weeks.

The HHG had the Sony SXRD, the new JVC, and the 1080p Mits DLP lined up next to each other. Without playing with the settings I could tell no difference between the SONY and the JVC with DISH HDNET playing. I thought the JVC MIGHT have a slightly better off axis viewing and I thought its anti glare screen showed less reflection than the SONY did. I thought the cabinet BLEW the Sony away for those of us who have a cabinet to fit the TV into. I thought the Sony and the JVC looked more natural and with better colors than the Mits DLP did but again- this was a store set up without me playing with settings. I looked at the sets for 15-20 minutes from all angles and even got down in floor to look up at sets and I thought the SONY and JVC looked virtually the same to me when looking directly on axis with the TV.

But I have a cabinet that will fit a 61" JVC and only a 50" SONY. I thought the glare from the JVC was less than the SONY and I have a room with windows. It was subtle but I thought the R/L off axis view from the JVC was slightly better. There was no way to tell in this type setting the black levels. But based on what I saw with the consumer model then I decided to buy the PRO JVC model and will have it in by the next week or so.

Why you can't judge how the picture looks when it is in motion,

this picture is easily the best RP shot I have seen including pics

of the 006.

A subjective opinion: Different displays will look better to some folks after all.

I also went to hhgregg. Probably the same one you did. I spent over an hour futzing with the displays to optimize the colors and walking back and forth comparing faces, lines, shadows, blacks, mosquitos, etc. When I was done the LCOS displays definately were better than the mitsu dlp. I should note that I am particularly sensitive to rainbows on DLPs, and the new sets have not resolved that for me. Now as for the JVC vs the SONY it came down to small differences. If I had to set a number to it I would say that there was a slight, and I mean slight (usually sub 5%), better picture on the sony to my eyes.

If the prices were the same and the cabinets were similar (aka removable sony ears), and they both took 1080p inputs, I would have gone home with the sony that day.

That being said I couldn't buy the JVC that day as I would have eventually been pissed knowing that the sony looked a little better to me. After all we are talking about a $4k purchase here. As it stands I am waiting till CES to see what the hopefully near future holds. I certainly am not waiting til 07 to get a new tube, but I can hold out a couple more months to get as close to what I really want out of a next gen tv.

I've been to my local HHG 5 different times and I have no problems raving about the JVC PQ. I won't say it's better than the Sony, but the Mts is (to me) not close.

I know I'm going for the Pro model (in time for the Super Bowl). The Sony is top shelf as well, so it's down to price and cabinet style, which makes the JVC a lock for me. You can rave for more than one and still choose one over the other.
What's wrong with being second best? Let's say for arguments sake, the JVC is only 98% as good as the Sony picture quality. Is that really so bad? The picture quality is still unbelievable, you get unsupported 1080P inputs, no "dumbo ears", availability of a 70" model, and a lower price. I think people should be commended for NOT saying that the JVC has better picture quality even if they own a JVC. It's very honest. I've seen them both for brief periods of time, and I give a slight edge to the Sony the times I've seen them. But I'm still on the powerbuy for the JVC. I may still change my mind, I think the Sony is fantastic, and I think if they announced they would have a 1080P 70" version at a competing price, a lot of people would reconsider. However, that's not the case, and for today, the JVC is a real competitor. In addition, a lot of people take the 1080P input issue very very seriously. There's really no excuse for having a 1080P TV that doesn't have a 1080P input.

Has anyone heard of people returning their JVC 1080P sets yet?

People want to make this into a digital either it's perfect or it sucks scenario. That isn't the case. Initial reports so far indicate a fantastic product.

I think they are both outstanding products, but the JVC has the 1080P input, the 70" size, and the lower price, and for me, that is enough to push me into the JVC camp.

In addition, I still don't get the feeling that someone has spent a lot of hours with the 61" JVC and the 60" Sony side by side, running the identical material. I think under those conditions, the two will be very very close. Still, the Sony has an undeniably smaller pixel gap, and that may or may not make the difference.

I've watched these forums for almost 5 years now, and it's taken this long for sets to come out to make me want to plunk down the cash. I'm sure I'd be happy with either the JVC or Sony.

After all, it doesn't have the 'Status Symbol' Sony has.

The set has just been out a month. What do you expect 4 or 5 magazine articles out?

The 2006 Sony SXRD will have detachable speakers.

Will the cabinet be silver, black, or charcoal grey?

The 2006 CES won't be until 1st week in january, where did you get this info?

If the speakers will be detachable, does that mean we will always have to use the homw theater speakers for sounds? or did they move it to the bottom?
Detachable means they can be removed if you choose not to use them. Naturally they are also re-attachable. This allows for the huge advantage of needing less space required for positioning the set. I imagine they will have some kind of hinge apparatus.
