Hi everyone,
I've been a lurker around here for about a month or so; I've appreciated the amount of knowledge that exists and what I've been able to learn so far. Admittedly, however, I'm a newbie to the HDTV world and probably will have little to contribute of any significance.
My situation is that of a beginner. . .my wife and I have used a 20" Panny in our living room (from our college apartment) for a while now as we diverted our "starting out" income to things like furniture and a new vehicle (gotta have priorities

). Now, with $145 in Sears rewards certificates expiring in December, we want to go ahead and finally get a "real" TV. We have toyed with just buying a SDTV for now since we don't plan on getting HD progamming for at least another year, but we are avid DVD and TV on DVD watchers and realized that a fairly large HDTV can be had for under 1000 dollars. . .which fits our budget. So, Sears is the store, 4:3 ratio give the best bang for the buck at this price level, and the options are the 32" Sony and the 32" JVC, which I just discovered Sears carried a couple of weeks ago while checking online.
Anyway, I decided to post because I wanted to thank Steve for mentioning this JVC television, which has limited availability but can be found at Sears and Amazon.com. Sears sells the TV 100 dollars below MSRP. I've been waiting for Sears' famous 10% off everything sale to pounce and the time is here. Add my free rewards certificates and another 30 dollar coupon I have and either way, the Sony or the JVC can be had for a GREAT price!
I'd appreciate any comments any of you may have about this TV as you come across it in the future; I plan on checking it out vs. the Sony tomorrow and will let you know what my amateur and inexperienced opinion is when I formulate it and if you are interested. I've seen the Sony in three stores but I did not make an effort to determine whether I was looking at HD or SD. The picture quality was very good, but not the "amazing" that I hear you experience when looking at HD programming, so over the next couple of days I need to study these TVs in the store with greater scrutiny (i.e., find out what kind of connections they have).
I also must admit that I probably would not be able to pick out some of the image quality issues that you guys seem to on this forum, but I think it's safe to say that though I want the best image quality possible I also am more concerned about reliability. I believe JVC and Sony are both reputable in that category, but JVC offers the better standard warranty on their HDTV (1yr parts and labor vs. 1yr. parts and 90 days labor for the Sony). Another plus? Perhaps.
Take care and thanks again for the great forum!
Josh
