JVC Non-Pro, Sony LCD, or Samsung

663 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  roncova
Hello,

I have my own variation on this popular debate. I was hoping for some input from the folks here. I have pretty much narrowed my selctions down to the following:

- JVC HD-52G786 52" D-ILA at 720P

- Sony KDF-E50A10 50" LCD Projection

- HL-P5085W 50" DLP on pedistal

My intended usage will be in a largish 1 bedroom apartment with a fair amount of natural light. I will be watching DirecTV, DVDs (hopefully from an upscaling player,) and playing occasional Xbox games.

Thanks for your thoughts!

LCOS based displays are by far my preference over any other microdisplay tech. Choose the JVC, no RBE (DLP), no ScreenDoor (LCD).

Just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions!

Well, my opinion differs dramatically. I would rate them Samsung pedestal (which is better than the Samsung tabletop models, and has no A/V lag) > Sony A10 > JVC 720p DILA. The Samsung pedestals have a sharper PQ with better blacks than the other sets. As long as you don't see rainbows with DLPs, I would recommend that as the way to go. LCoS is a great technology, especially the 1080p Sony SXRD, but the 720p JVC just doesn't compare, IMO. And by now you've figured out the problem with these types of threads - if you get 5 responses, you'll have 5 different opinions.

JVC for sure

I would steer clear of the JVC. LCOS is great but the 720P JVC's that I've seen have overly bright colors and quite a few image artifacts. The Samsung or the Sony are far superior from your choices. Again just an opinion and the happy JVC owners will surely disagree.
Be wary the naysayers! The JVC is fantastic. I've got the 56" 720p and it is by far the best TV i've owned. The picture is by far a better balance than anything I compared it to in it's price range. As far as it being to bright, hmmm, turn it down in the settings (I did). I'm sure you know if you go and compare TV's in the store, they have them cranked to maximum warp speed. Yes, if you want the JVC to be bright, it exceeds in that department and will look like the core of the sun. Just turn it down manually or if you don't know how, just press the TheaterPro button on the remote. Go for the JVC first then Sony then Samsung. Honestly, I had to get rid of my Sammy 5065 due to the RBE. I couldn't take it anymore. It was making me sick. Not to mention the full light engine replacement before that because the DMD failed. And gaming, forget the DLP. The lag on mine rendered it nearly useless. In the end it's up to you and all we can give you are opinions, and of course, that is all this is.

Here you have it. People either love the JVC or hate it. The JVC is the brightest set out there, so it looks great on the showroom floor. But it has the worst black levels, so it is inferior (IMO) to the others for watching movies at night. (And this is why these types of thread are not very helpful - you just wind up with very differing opinions.) And of course if you see rainbows, like aod does, then DLP technology is not for you. But if you don't, it's a great technology.
I see rainbows but have learned to live with it, at first it was very disappointing/irritating but it has only been a week or so and I have adjusted.
Update: I went with the Sony 50A10. I did the Costco deal that comes with the stand, and picked up a DirecTV H20 box at the same time to upgrade from my existing DirecTivo box.

I have been really happy with the TV so far. It handles standard definition really well, especially if you're watching in pillar mode. I have also been pretty pleased with Xbox play on it. I have two DVD players in the house: an aloder Pioneer unit and a Panasonic DVD/VCR combo unit. the Panasonic, which does progressive scan output, looks much better. Literally overnight, however, it seemed to develop some kind of audio stutter / dropout via the optial digital audio output through my Pioneer receiver, but I digress...
