Jvc xxFH96 Service menu adjustments and tv video settings

9667 Views 139 Replies 26 Participants Last post by  videobruce
Hi I finally adjusted my tv using the dve disc and went into the service menu.

I use the standard Theater mode for watching dvd movies and Standard for watching all other sources.

On the standard setting I ended up with tint being at +3, contrast down -17 and brightness at +5.

Color Low

Color Management Off

Dynamic Gamma On

Smart Picture Off

Digital Vnr Off

Mpeg NR On.

I found that the picture on the grey scale using dve and the Normal video status settings had a little touch of blue/cool to my eyes.

So I went into the service menu and dropped the B Drv down two points, from 132 to 130.

To access the service menu is the same as the older Jvc but the items numbers are all different than the what is lited in the older service manual from page 26 to 28.

Luckly the R drv, G drv, and B drv were the first three items to come up.

Factory settings was R drive 135, G drive 138, and B drive 132.

I reduced the B drive to 130 and this brought the tiny bias of blue down.

Tonight afer viewing two movies in theater mode I decided the greyscale was off.

I put back on the dve and reduced R drv to 133 and G drive to 135. I wish there was cut adjustment for dark levels.

On theater pro the color of the grey scale was pretty good.

I did this using the Oppo at 1080i so Iam not sure if it only adjusted the 1080i input. I guess I can always check viewing the 480i cable signal via the built in tuner.

There is one adjustent that I would like to adjust but I dont know which item it is. Displaying a overscan image I noticed that the picture needs to be adjusted down a bit.

At the top of the tv screen displayed is the 5% safe scan line. At the bottom of the screen is the line beyond the 5% safe scan line.

The picture was centered left to right so no adjustment was needed there.

I will ask my guy to order me a service manul but Iam not sure if Jvc will have one for sale yet.

If anybody knows the service menu item that is used to centering the picture up and down please post here.

In the service menu after the S001 for R drive, S002 for G drive and S003 for B drive after a few more it went into item numbers Mxxx.

No Mxxx is listed in the older service manual.

Thanks, Yaamon

Isn't that adjustable from the standard menu? It's shown on page 56 of the users guide.

Opps I did not noticed that in the manual. I will try that adjustment later.

Thanks for the info.
efranzen can you do me a favor and try and see if you can adjust the Full position while watching a 1080i signal.

I just tired and its greyed out. On the other two setting panorama and cinema I can but nothing on Full even through the manual says so.

I will call Jvc on Monday to ask them if nobody knows how to.
This is a great thread. Hope it doesn't stray off topic.

I'll be receiving my JVC 56" in Jan. and the greyscale will be professionally calibrated with test equipment at my dealer's, before it's delivered. I'll be following this thread with interest. Thanks.

BTW: I'll be requesting a printout of any changes (before AND after) that were made in the service menu during calibration.
Tiger keep us posted about the calibration.

Maybe you can watch them and see what item points they are using to adjust what and come back and see how far off and what they did.

I will enquire about a service manual next week.

Thanks
JVC has no listing (part number) for the manual as of yet. The closest thing is this (if you haven't seen it);

Yaamon,

I won't be able to be there when it's calibrated, so I'll ask him to write down whatever changes (factory setting vs new setting) he makes beside the items (eg: S003).

I'll report back to this thread, but I hope he'll be willing to write it all down for me.
Write down all of the SM settings now.

Afterwards, compare them with any changes.

You're right Yaamon, the option is greyed out when receiving a 1080i signal and on the Full setting.
Videobruce I think Tigers is getting his tv in Jan and the service numbers might be different from set to set ?

efranzen when you display a over scan image from a test disc is your picture centered ?
Yes, mine is centered with no overscan when using the test images from AVIA. I was actually a little worried that it might not be centered because the DVD player I'm using is the Sony DVP-NS70H hooked up via HDMI and set at 1080i. For many people this player has a problem with shifting the image down about a half inch. There is even an entire thread dedicated to it in the DVD Player section.
A little off-topic: I just received my 70", and can see 2 greyish blotches on the screen. Has anyone ever experienced this??
intexltd when you say grey blotches what do you mean and where do you see this ?

If you are in a cold climate maybe it was condensation on the panels ?

Did it clear up ?

If you havr a dve or avia disc try a over scan and see if your picture is centered ?

Dust or dirt on the optics?
Hey I just received my 56FH-96 this weekend and used DVE to set it up.

My image is centered perfectly btw, just an fyi.

Overall I turned off all the JVC snazzy color (dynamic gamma etc) and picture correcting features, to go with the natural calibrated look I setup.

I did color as High because I watch a ton of hockey, and on low, the ice looked brownish in color, and the jerseys were washed out, not what they look like at all in real life (season ticket holder so I see it and play enough to know how it should look) Whether or not its an accurate gauge for all other images, I don't know but High looks more realistic in general to me.

A few questions:

1. There is no default contrast setting correct? It is only available in the service menu?

2. I don't have a service menu and would prefer to avoid it if possible, though I would like to adjust contrast if its simple, can you post what to do once you access the service menu to adjust contrast?

3. The color bars were so close in DVE, blues were perfect with some tweaking of tint, and red/green are even, just slightly darker then the background, is the way to balance this with the service menu adjustment?

4. How do you adjust and tweak the image for an HDMI input if your DVD player is Component. I heard INHD broadcasts a calibration image I can DVR on saturday mornings, is this the best bet? (especially since its the actual source I am using for the HDMI, I could borrow a HDMI dvd player, but them I am calibrating on a different source)

GMan6 there is a regular contrast up and down on the video menu on the first page where you adjust color, tint, detail etc ?

I find that at standard video I reduced contrast to -18, brightness at +5, tint at 7+ and color up +2 on a 1080i signal with a dve disc.

On theater I have tint at +1 and brightness at +1. All others at 0.

I called Jvc and they are getting back to me as why I cant center a full picture like it says in the manual.

Yes picture and contrast is the same. :)

I don't have contrast in my menu. There is a 'Picture' slider. Is that the same thing?

Yea i have picture not contrast, and I believe they are the same.

+5 to brightness? Im shocked, I had to knock mine down to about -18 for the grey bar 2% above black test on standard using digital video essentials. I guess you have dynamic gamma on? Which would adjust it pretty close off the bat, however I like the natural images, no auto tweaks, which could explain our gap.

Saturday I have the INHD test pattern broadcast set to DVR so I can really configure my cable over hdmi signal properly.

I think (at work now dont remember exactly this could be way off lol) 0 on tint, -18 on brightness, -7ish on picture, -16 on detail, color -5 or so and i cant remember what else...

That was according to DVE on my PE 47Ai dvd player over a wireworld ultraviolet 5 component connection.

I was happy to see the color decoder is pretty spot on once I tweaked blue, red and green were consistent, just a little strong which I would need to tweak in the service menu but its not off enough for me to risk changing anything in there until I know what I am doing.

GMan6 on the theater mode the brightness is almost dead on I had to go +1. Color was 0 and tint was +1.

But in the standard mode I had to increase the brightness to +5 to get the grey bar and reduce the contrast to -18.

Iam using a Oppo Dve with the latest firmware so brightness they said is set to standard level and outputing at 1080i through the dvi to hdmi connection.

Maybe on the 70" because of the size I need a bit more brightness ?

Here are two picture after adjustments I reduced contrast even further -20, color at +5, tint at +8, detail -5 on standard setting.

Someone commented on another board that the blacks in her hair on the close up shot did not show that much detail and one of the reason is that I took the picture in a darkly lit room.

No real ambient light.

The shutter was at 1/10 - 1/16th of a sec and the camera on my knee and not a tripod.

I set the camera to expose for the center of the image where there is bright light. So the darker area would be under exposed.

I know if I was to use the spot metering on the dark areas it would should much better detail but over exposed on the bright scenes.
