I just recently picked up a Sony 950g Led LCD TV. With all of its on board apps and android set-up do I still need my 4k Amazon Firestick?

It depends. Will all the apps on it regularly be updated? From my personal experience the apps on Smart TV's tend to only get supported for so long or not updated as fast as apps would on a streaming device. For that reason I would keep it as a back up. Since its Amazon it will be more future proof in my opinion.

Do you subscribe to Amazon Prime?

I do and still don't "need" any fire stuff. But I imagine they are most useful to people who subscribe to Prime and moreover people who use Alexa.

I find AppleTV serves all my needs and wants with a elegant interface and whenever I use the only other streaming box I have (Roku) the amount of ads I can't avoid is too many.

Along with Amazon Prime, your Sony Display will have Alexa and Google Assistant Support. How long will Sony support the apps and services is a key factor. I'd hold on to the Fire Stick just incase.

How long will it take for the TV to be outdated? Perhaps they will be on to a new firestick by then.

App support for Streaming Devices tend to last longer than on TVs, but that may change in the near future. I have an X900E which is an earlier version of the 950 from 2017. This TV came with Android TV version 7 and has been updated to Version 8 (Oreo). This was a complete Interface Overhaul for Android TV.

Apps such as Vudu on the 900E did not originally have Atmos support. Youtube on the 900E did not have HDR Support until recently. With that said, it was really a surprise that this TV received the Oreo update, considering it's does not have the Processing power of its bigger brothers, the 930E and 940E.
With Smart Home support becoming the norm these days, support for Alexa and Google Assistant may keep these TVs in line for additional updates in the future.

It's not really a big deal now, but just a few years ago, it was preferred to have some type of Streaming device hooked up to the 900E to deal with the poor performance of Android TV. Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire device owners had a better experience, coupled with the fact that the display itself has an excellent picture. I have an Nvidia Shield connected to my 900E and rarely mess with any Native Apps on the TV.
