King Kong - How's the Audio

656 Views 15 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Re-Animator
For those of you who have seen the movie, how was the sound? Specifically the bass and the surround?

I'd like to have a thread to refer back to when the DVD comes out and all the whining starts. :D :D

In the theater I saw it in, the sound was excellent. Very well defined surroud with lots of back to front and L-R/R-L pans. There were some moments of deep bass grumbling that got me excited for the eventual DVD release.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like a winner.

So every time King took a step was plaster falling from the ceiling, soda spilling from cups, popcorn flying in the air? :D
I find the sound in the theater never matches up to what my home system does.

And this is where the debates begin as to what is the "correct" sound.

I was hoping more people who have seen the movie would post their impressions so we could refer back to them when the DVD comes out.
Sounded pretty active. Not as much deep bass as I thought there would be though. Gunshots sounded kind of wimpy to me. Lots of impressive growls and roars though.
DTS in the theater we saw. Very nice bass. Good use of surround sound when warranted, though I don't recall whether it was particularly active during the ESB scene - I was too focused on the action.
The surround was very active. In the theater I was in, the surrounds were constantly in use, and used to great effect to relate actions just off-screen. I also wasn't overwhelmed by the bass, but I never have in the theater I was in.

BTW, nobody asked, but I thought the video was extremely grainy, and I don't consider myself a videophile who notices those kind of things. Similar to WOTW. I think they do this to mesh the CGI FX in with the live action.

Hard to believe, since you were looking at FILM, not "video".

Hey, hey this is an audio thread, we'll discuss the film/video in another one. :D
A/V was great the theater I saw it in. Go see it at the theater. Do not wait for the dvd. The scope of the film is not as good on the smaller screen for such a movie like this.

Go find the time and see it in a large theater. It's worth every penny.
I forgot to mention how good this film looked. I'm not sure if Kong used a 4k or 2k DI but the print I saw was very detailed with very little grain. The total opposite of the LOTR films which were mushy and DNRed to death. The cgi stood well against the rest of the film, even in wide shots.

I have to agree with this 100%. Gunshot's wimpy sound where more noticible with machineguns.

I found the machine gun sounds to be pretty accurate. The type of old machine guns they were using would produce more of a popgun sound than a louder sound effect we're used to.

Wimpy guns = wimpy sounds.
I agree there wasn't much low-end bass that stood out, but the surrounds were GREAT. One particular moment that grabbed me was when Ann was first being offered to Kong.... Just before Kong actually showed up, there was a lingering shot on Ann (tied to the posts). Almost in unison with Ann's eyes, the sound of Kong making his way thru the jungle went from the left surrounds to the right, it really sounded like Kong was right behind you! Lots of nicely designed audio moments like this in the film, can't wait to watch it at home!

A Thompson fires the .45ACP round which is pretty darn loud. At least it is to me. I was too busy watching the action to notice if anyone was shooting a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle), which fires .30-06. Anyone with any experience with this round can tell you there is nothing wimpy about it.

Anyway, the bass in the theater was great, and the surrounds were very active. But firearms never sound right in a movie.
