Klipsch RF-82 Question

1534 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  -Ticarus-
Hello, I have an opportunity to purchase a pair of RF-82's that are around 5 years old. These are in immaculate condition and he still has the boxes. The guy wants $600.00 for the pair. I was wondering anyones thoughts on the price. Good deal, bad deal or just right. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like crutchfield.com sells them for $550 each. If they are in as good of condition as you say they are, I would think that it's an OK deal. I found these on audiogon.com for $525, but not sure how old they are.

I also wondering if I would need to run a subwoofer with the 82's? I was told with a sub and the 82's it might be too much bass. Any thoughts?
I would recommend getting a subwoofer. You could cross it over at 80 hz and be perfectly fine. It will actually sound tons better with a dedicated sub than letting the speaker handle everything. When you use a powered sub, it takes a power load off the amp and the amp can use that power toward running the mids and highs through your Klipsch's.

It depends on the application. For music, if you have them set up in the room in an optimum location, and away from the wall, about a couple of feet or so, you will not need a sub. They can go down to the lowest extension of most music, (around 40 hz or so), with plenty authority. And the better the receiver, the better that low extension and the clearer the sound, (you are driving two 8" woofers per speaker after all). For HT applications, I always recommend a dedicated sub. Yes, the RF-82 can go down pretty low, but most movies these days have an abundance of LFE, LFR, and low extension dynamics that goes beyond even the largest floor standing speaker's capabilities.

He's absolutely right. I always assume that people are using for HT. If you are only using them for music listening, you definately do not need a sub.

Thanks so much for all the input.

If you want to watch movies and do not want to run a sub you are squarly going in the wrong direction. For the rf82s a sub is still needed. You need a big sub.

I have these speakers and they are incredible and I'm driving them with the formidable Onkyo 906. Still need a crushing low LFE sub.
For reference, I got these at the same price brand new this past summer! I love my RF-82's, regardless of what the RF-63/83 ppl say :)

Id offer the person 500 for the pair you can get them brand new for about 380 each on amazon
I also bought these brand new for $550 a pair two months ago at Ultimate Electronics... I actually went there last night and they have the rf-42 for $149 a speaker and $199 for the rc-62. So I would say look around first.
