My friend asked me to have a look at his Klipsch RF 600 home theatre speaker. His kids were using it for karaoke and now one of the woofers is acting up.

I took out the woofer and pushed it down. I could hear a metallic crunching sound. The speaker itself has no visible cosmetic defects. Any idea what this could be? I'm not an expert at all.

That driver in the speaker is blown. That crunchy metal sound is the indicator that it's blown. Normally the inner parts of the speaker stay suspended in a magnetic field. When the speaker is working properly in its travel excursion there is no metal to metal contact. But when a speaker is blown or overworked beyond its excursion limits this travel becomes sloppy and metal to metal contact happens. That driver needs replaced.
