I enjoyed the premis and content of the movie, but Tom Cruise just didn't "fit" for me. During the whole movie he could not convince me that he was nothing more than just "acting" the part.

In spite of that fact, the picture quality was stunning IMHO.

What a horrible movie!!!! So, so boring. The scenes were like watching paint dry. Everything was like in slow motion. I knew there was a reason why I couldn't really remember it the first time I watched it. I tried watching it again last night, and the damn thing literally put me to sleep. I just got tired of waiting for the next line.

That would be D-Theater. Of course limited to sixty or so titles.

I liked it a lot. Most everyone I know didn't, however.

It was an OK movie. The High Def version blows the 1.33:1 DVD away.

Dean, I am sorry you did not enjoy the movie, unfortunately of impressions that I got from those their reaction was quite different. At least you know not to waste you time on watching it again. :) Besides, its not like this was the first bad movie you sat through, right?

yes, of course. If anybody doesn't like a movie you do, it must be b/c he's a neaderthal incapable of enjoying any movie without car chases or explosions.

I know this movie is supposed to be some sort of profound odyssey of sexual self discovery. What it comes off to me is a Skinemax flick with artistic pretensions. The cinematography is great and Nicole Kidman sure has a nice ass, and if I were an aging "cinematic genius" I could think of worse things to do with my time, but a good movie it wasn't.

Splendidly shot softcore porn with a Hollywood budget. I noticed the strategically placed CGI spectators at the orgy were much more obvious in the HD showing vs. the standard definition versions.

I heard those where put there so the movie could get an R rating. If you get the DVD from another country the CGI spectators are not there.

As it turns out I don't really assume that DeanP66 has terrible taste. But it was irritating to me that in response to Tom Roper's post, the first words out of his mouth were "What a horrible movie!" I recognize that the film was slow paced at times and that the dialog could have been handled a lot better. But visually it was amazing and the story was fascinating and when the movie was over I felt that I had seen something really different and creative.

i don't think i've ever seen more enveloping lighting than what was employed in eyes wide shut. the use of natural lighting and color was nothing short of astonishing. nobody lights movies this way. it's definitely a photographic treasure, particularly in hd.

the unfortunate tradeoff being, of course, the high-speed grain of the film. oh well.

the whole thing plays out with a very direct sort of feel, almost like a stage play or something. it's hard to describe the vibe i get from it.

it's not the easiest movie to watch, of course. the entire thing takes place in tom cruise's head and is produced with a sort of detachment that kubrick is known for. for its many flaws, it still manages to become a superior film experience in some way.

they panned it when it came out, for the most part, but it'll be revered in 10 years. not unlike some of kubrick's other films.
