L/C/R upgrade for $1000 -- Ready, set...GO!

This thread is the direct result of my being bitten by one huge Upgrade Bug after installing a new Emotiva UPA-7 in my HT last night. While my 3-month-old Polks aren't bad at all, and they're certainly worth the $485 I paid for them, I'd like to explore an immediate upgrade at roughly double their cost.

Here's what I have now: (Room is 17' x 13' x 8')
AVR: Pioneer 1120
Amp: Emotiva UPA-7
Front R/L: Polk Audio Monitor 70's
Center: Polk Audio CS2
Surrounds: Emotiva ERD-1's
Sub: BIC (Accoustech) PL-200

As I said, I'm looking to replace my LCR speakers. My only requirement? I want a new front stage that blows the pants off of my current front stage!

Can it be done for $1000? I sincerely hope so. I'd really like to see what 3.0 combos you guys come up with.

Thanks ahead of time!

PS: If/when I find replacements, I'll be selling my current fronts for a reasonable price.

Just to get started - I would go to Onecall.com and look at the

Boston VR3 towers and the VR Center speaker. There may be a

Christmas special on the towers. This is a serious sounding system

and is more balanced and dynamic than the Polk's. The towers

are now discontinued, and use to be over $1200 for the pair.

I have been upgrading for the last 20 years.
lots and lots of options for you. I've listed one.

Find someone near you that sells the GLE 470 and 455.

I agree. I have a set and they are very good.

You could get Ascend Acoustics 340SE's across the front. That should come out to just under $900 i think. Good seamless soundstage.
Do you have any size or appearance requirements? What don't you like about the Polks? Have you listened to other brands that you preferred? I would go out and demo some stuff with your own CDs. Get an idea of what sound you like and don't.

The Chase Audio Pro-10s should kill your Polks. More dynamic which is probably what you are looking for. There is a thread about them here .

The suggestions above are also very good options. Speakers are very personal choices that no one can make for you. The best thing is to listen with your own ears. There is no magic amount to spend and you get instant happiness. You could spend $5000 and not be happy. Good luck!

That is true.
I know this isn't what your asking but I think I would upgrade that sub before the front three.
Come up with some more cash and get the Emotiva ERM-6.3 LCR Monitors!

Thanks for the replies so far guys, I really appreciate it. I definitely understand the subjective nature of this choice, which is why my primary intent is to collect a list of combos that I may or may not have thought of -- along with some pros/cons for each.

I'm also not trying to rush this, I promise!

As I did with my entry-level Polks, I will attempt to audition as many of the combos as possible. There is vert little chance that I'll ever buy speakers without hearing them first.

I spent months doing research and testing before buying any of my equipment, but it was all centered around finding an entry-level solution. So, I'm almost starting from scratch when doubling the price.

After thinking about it some more, I have come up with a few requirements/restrictions:

1) must be black finish, but not glossy! (my sub is glossy, which I regret)

2) center speaker must be no larger than 8" tall and 27" wide to fit in my stand.

3) can't be, or sound like, Klipsch.

4) $1000 max, firm (but, if you think I can find them used for this amount, I might be ok with that too. I bought my amp on Audiogon
)

5) bi-amp preferred, but not required.

6) used for 70% HT and games, 30% music.

Unfortunately, WAF has vetoed visible room improvements; otherwise, I probably would have started there.

I'm happy with my bass response right now, so upgrading my sub is my second priority.

Like a poster above said, I just don't think my Polks are dynamic or clear enough for my (upgraded) tastes. They do a good job, especially after adding the UPA7, but just not "good enough" anymore.

Does all of this make sense?

Thanks again guys... Please keep the ideas coming!

The Polk's served a purpose in their price range. The Boston would be

a good option, and fit in your restrictions. However, it is hard now to

audition them. Hope you can find a way to hear them, from some one

in your local area. Highly reccomended for your budget.
Your in luck!

I like these:

Aw nuts, I though they had a ton of them, looks like only two now that i re-read the post.

Edit: you could buy just one LCR-6 for the center and then get these two:

Thats two B&W DM640 for $500 and one B&W LCR-6 for $275 plus add shipping to all.

Does going from a $500 L/C/R to a $1000 L/C/R sound twice as good?

No guarantee!
I have Gold Triads across the front and love them. You can pick up some used for under $1000 if you look around. Just sold 3 LCR Silvers for around that and they would kick butt for you.
I'm telling you... find a place that sells Cantons, if you can, and go listen. They are awesome.
I have 2 words that will rock your world

MONITOR AUDIO

Enough said.

Oh also Martin Logan has a great new line of Motion speakers as well that are worth a listen.

Since the Boston Acoustics VR3s are discontinued I suggest asking around in the Boston Acoustics sub-forum and see if anybody will let you listen to theirs. Your saving about 50% off what they sold for for when you could buy them B&M.

Good on all counts. But like any rear ported speakers the do need room behind and around them.

Anyway good luck.
