I am in the same dilemma. I am building a new house and my theater room will be above my garage. There is no carpet in any other room except for this one. I hate carpet but kept it in the theater room because I ran out of money and because I thought carpet is good for sound. However, I have read several articles lately in AVS that said carpet muffles the sound and having hard surface and area rugs is a better option.
Read Ethan's article. If you have sound treatments throughout the room (i.e. OC 703 with fabric, carpeted stage/riser, etc) you could easily go with laminate floors. Listen to your system and place rugs in areas that might be too bright. Experiment.
