what is the best way to test lan speed? is there some software that will do it?


just installed a netgear gigabit switch (gs608) between the media server and htpc and wanted to see how fast the transfer speed is.

added a netgear gige pci card to the media server (ga311) and the htpc has gigabit on the motherboard (asus p4p800dlx)

Bunch of ways to do it, but my preferred program is a program called iperf http://dast.nlanr.net/Projects/Iperf/

CDCheck ( http://www.elpros.si/CDCheck/ ) is a useful real-world benchmark. Also on Windows XP you can simply xcopy a bunch of files and watch network Utilization in Task Manager (Networking tab)


Real-World perf should be about 20-25 mb/s and you should be getting 70-100mb/s from synthetic benchmarks such as netio.


Uncheck the QoS packet scheduler in network connection properties for a small speed increase.
