Larger bars when upconverting vs running at 480p????

OK gents, I did some searching but was never able to quite nail this down so I feel Ive earned the right to ask and need a confirmation:

When I set my Sony DVP-NS70H to upconvert to either 720p or 1080i I noticed that the black bars on anamorphic movies (2.35:1) are slightly larger than when just running it at 480p. The bars are a good inch larger and this obviously kind of stinks.
Ive already checked the obvious things like player output (16x9), TV stretch, etc, etc. Those settings are all good.

I did see in a search that the Sony adds small bars to 16x9 movies....is this what I am also seeing? I wasnt sure???

Im using HDMI of course....

Thanks!

Does the aspect ratio look ok? Are circles circles and not ellipses?

Some displays overscan at 480i/p but not at HD resolutions. Could be you are getting clipped on all the edges which makes the black bars look smaller at 480p.

I'll double-check that. Never thought of it....

Thanks...
You will see larger bars on the Sony DVP-NS70H because it uses the MediaTek chipset which vertically compresses the image when upscaling (bug). At 480p, no upscaling, hence, no issues.

The Sony DVP-NS75H incorporates a fix for this, however, it sacrifices horizontal resolution as a result.

Hate to hijack the thread, but a question for DavidHir.....

As an owner of a Sony 75H, just wondering how massive a diff in PQ is this horiz resolution "sacrifice" is? 1080i scaled DVDs look really nice with my Sony on a 51" Hitachi.

I'm not saying the image doesn't look nice. But, put in the Avia calibration disc and look at the 200Mhz Resolution pattern; the horizontal patterns show significant loss compared to non-MediaTek players or the vertical patterns while upscaling. Or, just compare the upscaled patterns at 1080i to 480p.

Went home for lunch and popped in AVIA. I see what you mean.

Still, not so significant a loss--in terms of "normal" DVD watching--to prod me into getting a new player. At least not until the format war settles (if ever!).

Thanks David, that is obviously the issue!

Time for a new DVD player I suppose!

The next best option for the price/performance is probably the Toshiba HD-A2...if you can get a bug-free one. That's what I'm using for SD DVD today - though HD DVD and Blu-ray takes up more of my viewing these days.
