Laserdisc & DVD recorders Experts?

Since I'm in the LD mood this week I thought I would try an experiment with my el-cheapo $99 Centrios DVD home recorder.

I recorded "Event Horizon" on DVD with my back up LD player (Magnavox). Then I did an A/B comparison playing it back on my Mits with the Pio 8000 playing the LD vs. my Oppo playing the copy. Well I was surprised that the copy seems to look much better on my Mits 55" rear projo (WS55315).

This leads me to all kinds of thoughts. One I do not really want to spend 600 hours backing my LD's to DVD's. The other is was it the encoding that enhanced the pq or just the comb filter in the recorder via composite input? If it was the later it would seem that just looping the LD through a device could yield the same result.

I had heard of some people saying that running their LD through JVC D-VHS units improved pq due to high end filters etc.. Seeing that one can pick up a a JVC 3000 cheap it is an idea. I mean the way I see it the comb filter is the key. The problem is I can not verify what type of filters are in a D-VHS unit and are they in a S-VHS deck as well or for that matter even if my Centrios has one.

Anyone with experience in this type of stuff please chime in.
