I was talking with some guys from work and someone said that laserdiscs had better picture quality than DVD. I was trying to understand hows thats possible if it's possible at all. I mean DVD is supposed to be so superior. Can someone explain how this might be possible?

If vinyl can sound better than a CD because it's analog than maybe an analog laserdisc really could be better than a "digital" DVD.

There are HiVision MUSE Laserdiscs which are better than DVD.

A very poorly encoded DVD will show a lot of MPEG-2 artifacts, which subjectively looks worse than the "analog noise" of Laserdiscs... but for major DVD studios who properly do the MPEG-2 encoding, the quality is better than LDs.

Sorry, no way regular analog LD is better than DVD. Here’s why:

- Analog LD is NTSC composite colorspace

- Analog LD is, well, analog, with noise and all the attendant issues

- A LBX LD has 33% LESS vertical resolution than an anamorphic DVD

- Film based LD’s require 3:2 pulldown processing for smooth playback

A DVD played on an HTPC and displayed on a Front projector (Sony G70):

- Perfect film-source frame rate synch with 48hz refresh rates, truly film-like

- Scaling to quadruple the rez (1440x960) is almost HD-like

- Anamorphic sources displayed with projector raster squeeze yields 960P worth of actual active visual display on screen

- Much better than LD luminance, color depth and saturation

- No noise (but as some point out, depending on encoding, some MPEG artifacts)

I have a top of the line Pioneer CLD-97 LD player that I scale to my FPJ via dScaler on the HTPC. And while the results are astounding for LD, it pales in contrast to DVD, which in turn is not quite as good as HDTV (1080i).

Oh, and never mind the convenience factors, DVD wins hands down.
