Launch console just died on me?

2369 Views 35 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  KoRn
Playing Forza 2 demo and all of a sudden. The screen went all weird with colors and what not. The screen was mostly a green tint all over the place. I quickly turned it off. Then turned it back on. Only for it to come up with no video signal. I have it hooked up to a pc monitor. So I tested it out on the tv in the living room and same thing. No video. So im assuming its dead? Anyone else had this happen to them? I dont have any red lights or anything. I can also hear sound. Just cant get any type of video signal.

welcome to the club. Had to replace my launch 360 many moons ago. The good news is u can now get the elite or just get a ps3 or wii. I didnt have either option when mine broke
Ive owned just about every console within reason and this is the first time one has ever gone out on me. I bought Xbox late in the game and didnt have problems with it. I never wouldve thought the 360 would have this many problems. Its an awesome machine. But the hardware quality isnt there. I spent just a little over $1200 on this thing day one. Buying games and accessories for it. Since then buying even more stuff for it. I will just be parting it out and hopefully get some money back. I refuse to give MS another dime to get this machine fixed. This will be my last MS console as well. If MS fixed it for free being its a launch console and there well known to have problems. I would change my mind. But I dont see them fixing it for free. Ill give them a call tommarow and see. But if they cant and want to charge me $140 to fix it. Ill just hang up.
Hopefully MS will get their act together w/ the systems that are coming out from here on out. Right now the next gen market is mostly hardcore gamers and enthusiast, but the casual gamer that decides to buy a system in the next few years is going to do a quick google search and many of those gamers may be concerned with what they find.

I totally agree. If MS wants to get the casual gamer onboard they better fix these stupid problems if they want them to shy away from a PS3 or Wii. Any casual gamer who sees the amount of problems the 360 has will be very leery about buying one. I'm on my 2nd 360 btw....
Knock on wood but my launch unit is still alive...

My launch console died a while back. DeadRising demo seemed to kill it. All i can say is i do not understand why anyone would not purchase an extended warranty. It's not the 50's anymore, so you have to expect everything will break at some point

That's odd, usually after a few restarts it'll flash the 3 red rings of death.. Have you removed the HDD and booted it up? On my last 2 360's when I did that a few times I got the 3 RROD.. I hope you can get Microsoft to fix it for a fair price for a POS made electronic..

Casual gamers don't spend $600 on consoles.

And they do buy 400 or 480 dollar consoles? Sony is gambling that a casual gamer is more likely to see the value in an added bluray drive and a more reliable product. I agree with you that their 600 dollar price point is way too high and it is possible that it could be their downfall. Nevertheless, that is the exact reason that this is MS chance to win the war, but IMO they are blowing it with a crappy design.

People don't like to spend a lot of money, even 400 dollars, on a product that is going to crap out on them. Then your stuck buying a whole new product, or at best, spending another 150 to get it fixed. It is absolutely true that 600 or even 400 dollars is a big investment, but that is even more reason that it is important to make such an investment reliable. To be perfectly honest, if I wasnt a Costco member I wouldnt even own a system, due to the fact that I dont want to buy a system that dies and then have to deal w/ getting a refurbised replacement or paying money to replace it down the road.

What do you guys think of the chance the soldering has come undone somewhere within the 360? I know someone that can solder very well.
My launch unit died a month ago with checkerboard pattern/3 rings of death. The good news is MS replaced it free in 2 weeks even though it was off warranty. I am in Canada. I would like to see Sony do that!
My launch day console died with the release of Hitman Blood Money. Remember buying the game, taking it home, putting it in and getting 3 red lights. Up until that point I wouldn't believe it could happen to me. I got a new one through a Gamestop exchange warranty.
My beloved Launch Xbox 360 died on me also (DOB 10/28/05). She went quick and painless, a couple of screen lockups and then the three red rings after the recent updates. I calculate she had about 4,680 hours, and each enjoyable. She is being sent in for resurrection (warranty still effective till 12/08) and the return is eagerly awaited.

RIP
I do not know what the policy is on posting links to mods and such, but I just did a fix on one my friends launch console and it seems to be working flawlessly. I had about 12 bucks in it and a few hours worth of time. It had 3 red lights and would not even boot to dash or anything. Have played 3 hrs and no problems yet. Just search for x clamp replacement. I will post links and more info if its aloud.
Launch unit here still going. It tried to die on me about 2 months ago, but I took it apart and cleaned the cheap thermal paste and thermal pad from the CPU and GPU and applied a nice layer of Arctic Silver 5 and now all is well. No problems since then.

I just don't get why they arent built this way in the 1st place. Thermal paste is so cheap and its gotta require less production/manpower initially than working on all the broken 360s.

Your guess is as good as mine, I thought the same thing when I pulled mine apart and noticed that the thermal pad and thermal paste was dried up and hard as a rock.
My launch 360 died a couple of days ago after the spring update. I called customer service and was quoted $139 for repair (sucks). I decided to hold off on sending it for alternative solutions. I ran the 360 thru the coding system outlined on the 3 red ring sticky and got a "0020" (unknown, possibly overheating).

I'm interested in a list of do it yourself solutions, if any of you can help out (I 've considered getting a new 360, but I want to wait till the newer cool running chips have replaced the old ones, whenever that will be).
my launch 360 died aboiut 6 months ago, while i was playing Oblivion...

good news: they had a replacement out to me in 3 days; bad news: that replacement died today.

sigh.
