lcd backlight question

417 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  MrMike6by9
Hello all. I have a question that was inspired by a post in the calibration forum. It had to do in part with the backlight setting of his lcd tv. I was under the impression that setting a backlight higher than the standard setting shortened the life of the backlight (which most seem to be 60,000 hours now). Is this true? Would a higher setting have a significant effect on the backlights life? I have my backlight set higher than standard, which is 0 on my tv's backlight setting. I have ambient light to contend with. Thanks for any replies.

Take this for what it's worth. In the 26 months since I acquired my RP-LCD, the counter says I'm averaging 7.5+ hours a day in use. For a little perspective on your question, I would have to use this set for another 19 years. If I increased the brightness enough to halve the life of the light, that's still a good decade. All bulb life estimates are mean time before failure calculations. When the lamp goes, it just goes but that doesn't mean yours dies abnormally early or late, it just dies at some point. Just relax and enjoy your screen.

YMMV
