In my opinion Divx looks pretty bad on LCDs. CRTs do a better job of masking the compression artifacts and smoothing out the picture. Plasma actually might be a better choice.

Whatever you choose, I don't think you're going to be "impressed" with the picture.
Divx is going to look worse the larger you go, LCD's will show more artifacts than plasma or crt.
i use ffdshow with a resize filter.. all my xvids look great.

do a search on ffdshow to learn more and check out the HTPC area
thx guys....but i forgot to tell you that i watch high quality rips(>1.5 gb per movie)..

1.Wht distance should be maintained between tv and the couch..

2.Can the artifacts be minimized with calibrating the tv

3.Will playing the Divx in a hd dvd player show any improvement
I've "heard" Oppo dvd players upscales divx, but I can't say for sure.
Divx will look best coming from a PC. I wouldn't be surprised if Oppo players upscale Divx, but a PC will do the same thing, and do a much better job.

No matter the quality of the rip it's still going to look like a regular SD satalite movie channel instead of an hd, hd-dvd, blu-ray kind of quality. If you are ok with that then no worries just find yourself a TV you will like. If i was going to get a new monitor i would get the sharp 32" 1080p gp1u but that's only cause it's the smallest 1080p tv out on the market.
I have 37 inch Olevia LCD and a philips 5982 upconvert DVD player.

I watch lot of divx(1.36GB) and they look fantastic on my Olevia. Well if the source is

heavily compressed it looks little bit worse on LCD comapfred to CRT. Good quality rips are fantastic.
@chrisherbert

The idea of connecting my pc with my lcd ..is great oh dude plz tell me more about the pc's upscaling capabilities...

A properly set up PC will outperform any upscaling DVD player, though the differences may be pretty subtle. For divx, however, there's no question -- a PC is the best way to play them.

There's not much to say about connecting a PC to an LCD TV. For the most part, you just plug it in as you would a regular computer monitor.
I would have to agree with quite a few post here already no matter what type of tech you use for a HDTV some alittle better than others in this case you most likely will not be impressed the saying goes garbage in garbage out not to be harsh in any way please don't take it like that but your taking a source thats already compressed and well compressing it even more so you are inherently altering the picture every time that is happening by removing bits of info and as most have said the larger the screen the more evident it becomes just my $.02 FWIW
Wht abou progressive scan does it improves the divx in anyway...

And Would the artifacts still be visible if i use an 26 in screen

All LCD tv's are naturally progressive scan being fixed pixel now the small the screen size will help some closer pixel pitch it may not perform miracles though lol in this case source material and scaler is important using a pc to scale will give you more options to adjust the PQ witch may be the way to go if you have or are making a media center just remember the better the source the better the PQ should be
@Higherthought420

Thx dude

Even im not xpecting HD quality ,all i want is descent picture with divx in biggest possible size...

Anyway dude im stuck with it because there is not any video library around my area..so Divx is the only option left..

So wht is the screen size you would recommend for Divx 26 or 32

Which plays the divx best..PC or a standalone player

What is pq?
See less See more
I would say the 32" just because the difference in PQ isn't going to be noticeably different between the two and bigger in most case is better and I would say at this point in time the pc will give much better results unless you go really high end on an up convert player like a marantz or better so IMHO the pc is the best bet especially if you already have one to use again just my $.02

you could always do the netflix thing.....and be sneaky not that I recommend that or anything......
I'm certainly not knocking that player at all as I do not have first hand experience with it but I still believe you will get the best results with a pc

by the way where are you located
Thx bro i really appreciate it..

Im in India
so I see netfix isnt going to help yeah go with the 32" if you already have a pc to use for the divx files definitly use that use zoomplayer or theatertek as the software player you should be good to go
