Hi All,

I have 3 teenage boys and they are on my projector sometimes 12-15 hours a day. I had read that some projectors do not handle this type of use very well. I have a dlp unit now but was looking at some of the new lcd units because of the price (Sanyo 700 or 2000) do you think going with a LCD would be ok or should I stick with DLP?

Thanks,

Chris

At least for 4 hours a day for each? I'm 17 and dream of having that kind of freetime.

As for DLP vs LCD issue, I think it shouldn't matter much. Provided the projector has adequate ventilation (and you might want to get a projector that switches to a "low" bulb setting), you should be fine.

Yes they have allot of time on their hands. They love their Xbox 360 and ps3. before I got the systems I had only 500 hours on my projector. For some reason I remember seeing something about over 8 hours a day of use being considered abuse? What projector do you have?

I have a Panasonic AE900 (LCD) and it works fine for watching a whole Saturday of movies.

I would also look for a projector that has a high bulb life (maybe 3000 hours) unless you don't mind spending the money on bulbs. You could also set up a "pay to play" where you kids pay for part of the bulb to help with bulb costs.

For extended hour usage, you are better off with a DLP projector. If you look in the owner's manual of some of the LCD projectors (Panny is one) you will find that they consider anything over 6 hours as excessive usage.

I thought that I read that in someones post. That will limit me in what projector to buy.

I am only at 480p now so i am still up in the air about 720p vs 1080p (not trying to start anything). (6 hours as excessive usage) Really. I am way over that LOL. Now do I buy 720p or 1080p. I really hate this
!!!! Go cheap and upgrade later

Some of that will depend on your source and seating distance. If you are going to be sitting close (less than 1.5x screen width not diagonal) then consider 1080p. If you are going to be mainly viewing BD and not much SD DVD or HDTV then consider 1080p. If realistically you will be viewing a lot more SD DVD and HDTV then consider 720p. If you can find a high end 720p machine then you are not giving much (other than lumens) if anything over a under $3,000 1080p projector. Check out this link:

People can say all they want but here it was put to the test and 1080p did not win.

Yea i have a 88" screen and sit about 10ft from it and the screen door is easy to see with 480p so at this point anything would be a upgrade. The res is one thing but contrast is big with me and I have a bat cave so i don't need a light cannon. thanks to all for your your help! i have a dc2 dlp 4805. mjg100 what are you running? How big of a screen and distance from it are you?

I would get them a good 1024x768 data PJ and keep them off of your PJ. You can find one for @ $500. Then, you can put up the PJ you really want for hdtv and movies.

reconlabtech,

That's not a bad idea! But my budget and "wife" won't let me buy 2 projectors lol.

So whats a good DLP for the price? i have a 13.6" throw and can go with an 88"-90" screen.

I think the closest DLP for your throw distance is the Mitsubishi HC1600. It'll throw a 94" image from 13'6. If you can alter the distance just a bit, itll throw a 90" from 13'.

Otherwise, you're looking at LCD for your throw distance and screen size.

For less than $1500 you can have both.

If you go with one, you will spend less time watching it for what you want and the long hours of gaming will take their toll on an LCD as well as put serious hours on the color wheel in a DLP.

Penny wise, pound foolish

DLP

- Sharp DT-510, can be found for @ $700

- Marantz VP8600, check secondact.com for @ $800

- Mitsubishi HC1600 or Optoma HD65 for @ $900

A high contrast data PJ can be found for $500

I have two set ups.

Small dedicated room set up with black floor, walls and ceiling. Planar PD-7130 projecting (11'-10" throw) onto 106" EluneVision (1.2 gain) fixed frame screen. Viewing distance is 11'-0". Black level is great. Colors really pop. This is the one that I now use 85% of the time.

Large room (17' ceiling height) with light gray walls. Marantz VP-12S4 (14'-4" throw) projecting on to 106" (2.8 gain) DaLite High Power roll up screen. Screen drops down in front of 50" SXRD TV. I view from 11'-6". Black level not as good due to ambient light reflection, but contrast is very good. Pic has lots of pop. looks like giant plasma.

I would agree. Seems like most sports bars I frequent have DLP for this reason (as well as sealed optics).

Thanks for all the info guys.

reconlabtech- The idea of two projectors does make sense and thanks for the advice I will look into that. It will take almost all of the stress off the main projector if I get a cheaper high contrast data PJ. Any recommendations!

mjg100-are both of your pj 720p? it looks like you have a couple of nice setups!! did you get the Planar PD-7130 from woot? 106" from 11ft and 720p how is the screen door? I ask because if you can do 106 at 11ft I should be just fine with 88" at 10ft.

Thanks again guys

Here's a good reason why you might want to get a DLP based projector.

At least here in Australia, a Panasonic LCD projector, the top selling LCD projector manufacturer, states that if you use their projector for more than 12 hours a week, it won't be covered by warranty!

Download the pdf file in the attached link and take a read.

ryllo -- The recommendations that the other members have made are very good. For long hours on a PJ, stay away from Panasonic - they tend to be anal about running their PJs for more than 6 hours per session (from what I've read).

I have both a Mitsubishi HC3 (960 x 540, LCD) that I bought for $600, four years ago (it's my backup unit). I just bought a Mitsubishi HC5500 (1080p, LCD) to replace my sick 720p DLP PJ. I usually run my PJs for 4 to 12 hours per session (6 to 10 hours, typical) with no problems for either the HC3 or HC5500. My HC5500 shows no SDE (screen door) at any distance beyond 3' from my 106" (16:9) screen.

One thing you should know is that some PJ owners report that their Xbox 360 looks much better on a 720p PJ, whereas the PS3 looks better with a 1080p PJ (but is Ok on a 720p PJ). This may effect your decision (as well as save you some money).

At 10' from a 88" - 90" screen, you will get almost no SDE (or none at all) with just about any 720p projector (depending on how good your eyesight is). Therefore, that might help your decision.

Another factor in your decision (as georgeorwell just said) is that most DLP PJs have sealed optics and no filter. With LCD PJ you have an air filter which should be cleaned every 100 hours of use. Without this extra maintenance, you will have the tendency for getting dust blobs on your LCD panels. A low cost 720p DLP would be great for the kids gaming activities.

This is all great info and i would like to thank you all for your help.

720p may be the way i go and it looks like I will stay with DLP as well. Now to find the best value in 720p with my 13.6 foot 88" - 90" screen restriction.

I may also get a high contrast data PJ too. I am a bit confused and my just buy a cheap Dynex 42" lcd for the kids to play on.

Thanks again guys.

I've been using my Optoma HD70 quite often now because I have this week off for work (since Christmas it has been doing about 10 hours a day). No problems yet *knock on wood* but it is a new projector (~200hrs on it) and I don't use bright mode. When I know it will be on all day I leave high altitude mode on which kicks up the fan. I don't know how much this helps but the fan noise doesn't bother me so I think it's a good thing to do when running the projector for extended periods.
