hi guys,

need advise from you as I am shopping a flat panel tv for my new house.

my living hall is 3.6m wide, and I intend to mount a flat panel tv on one end of the wall, and sofa on the other end.

I have considered 42" plasma panny PA20U earlier, but is now apprehensive because of burn-in problem, high power consumption (and heat tt it generates), brightness+contrast as compared to lcd, and that it does not have DVI (for option in Singapore they do not have) and separate tuning box. I didn't want to commit on 42" HDTV plasma, as the premium paid is not something I willing to (as compared to the premium for LCD).

My questions is

1. given the viewing distance is around 3.5m, will 37" TV looks puny, as I do not have much options with 37" being the largest size in the market todate.

2. Will analog TV signal displayed better in 37" LCD than a 42" EDTV or HDTV plasma?

3. I notice the difference for Sharp G-series and HV-series is just brightness (430 vs 450). For the difference between the 2 in terms of price, is it worth getting G-series over HV series one? In NA, when G-series was first launched, what's the launch price compared to the previous model (HV-series)?

Burn-in is no longer an issue with plasmas, as long as you don't abuse it, like taping CNN, playing it, then press pause and go for a week vacation in Hawaii. From what I've read here LCDs look better than plasmas on standard broadcasts, but both are a big improvement over a regular TV. That's all I know to help you with. For a distance test (and to see standard definition on a plasma) you can always go to a store to test it if you get no opinions here. My 22" LCD looks a good size from 5 feet, so don't think a 37" would look too small.

Yes, it will look puny from that distance.

I find that LCDs are typically too bright, and need to be dialed back. "Extra" brightness isn't a selling point for me.

Contrast on plasma is typically far higher than on LCD, so half of that looks rather wrong to me.
