OK, my wife was spoiled on vacation when she sat in a whirlpool tub and watched Firefly DVDs on our laptop. She is now hooked on a TV in our bathroom so she can sit in her tub and watch.....she is in the tub almost every night. So, I would like some recommendations on wall-mount LCDs for our bathroom. It would hang right beside the tub (i'm sure our township building inspector will have something to say about that, but they get $8k in taxes a year, so screw what he says...and no, I don't live in a mansion...I live in TAX HIGH NJ).

Since it would be so close to her (5 to 7 feet), I'm guessing it doesn't need to be very big. Cost is an issue as I would like to keep it as low as possible. But, I want a decent panel. I would love to have one with a cable-card slot, but I don't think the small ones come with them. Also, I'm guessing that HDMI would be a plus in this situation. 16:9 is a requirement as well.

I haven't decided on the install. The wall in the bathroom backs into the attic, so I can run electric, coax, and cat-5 for future use. I could even build a small "cubbie" to hold a component or two.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks

The HP LC2600N or LC3200N might be a good choice if they are still available. They are rebadged Sharps, they have great sound, and they have one HDMI input and a CableCard Slot as well as a built-in ATSC OTA tuner.

What about humidity? Obviously, this is a problem in a bathroom and will exceed the recommendations of the products. I have seen some enclosed LCDs on the web, but they are all VERY expensive. Seems like they should be a lot cheaper given the current prices. However, I guess since they are "specialized" they can charge whatever they want. Ugh.

and for your deck or backyard:

ps: low cost and special applications aren't synonymous - I'm looking for something similar but will probably get a std tv and keep the humidity down by always running the exhaust fan when steamy conditions are expected.

The Westinghouse 32w6 would be perfect for your needs at 5 to 7 feet. It was on sale for a great price. Maybe you can still get in on the deal.

Ah; for Jayzuz sake Brian, isn't it effin' obvious that there is only one LCD model that matches the viewing desires of your wife the mermaid: AQUA by SHARP.

Now fess up: which one of you has the greater impulse to keep her isolated for frequent prolonged periods, She or You?. :D ;) :D

When you say the wall in the bathroom backs into the attic, do you mean that literally -- that the attic space is just behind the bathroom wall? If so then maybe you could put a "window or mirror" in the bathroom and then mount the TV behind the window/mirror, keeping it out of the high humidity area. I have seen a few pictures of bathroom mirrors that look like a mirror if the TV is off, but let the picture through when the set is on. I am sure they are not cheap. . I would think that a home-brew solution using a clear plate of glass/plastic would be much more affordable.

If that would work, you could probably save some money by using a CRT since the bulk of the TV would be sitting in another room.

Thanks for the idea. Yes, one wall of the bathroom (where the TV would go) backs up to attic space above the garage. The window idea is interesting, but it would actually be a bit of work. Lets say the tv is 17". It would not fit between studs, so it would have to be framed out. Also, all the insulation would have to be taken into consideration as well.

Interesting idea, though.
