LCD Screen Smashed...Options?

1266 Views 16 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  OverpricedCables
Long story made short...my 7 month old Hitachi 32HDL51 screen got smashed today by an errant 5 year old wielding a dog bone while I was outside working in the yard  . TV isn't dead, but screen is. Top 1/3 of picture is present, but rest of screen is rainbows and looks like broken glass  . Need options (other than doing something with the child, that's in progress). Can the screen be replaced and at what cost, or just buy new (and if so, is there anything in today's market worth considering that have at least 2 digital inputs)?

pretty sure you still have the year manufacters warranty.......dont know if its covered, but its still something to look into
Homeowners/renters insurance???

So sorry about your loss. Hopefully you'll be able to laugh about this with you child decades from now.
Good luck getting the thing replaced under the factory waranty - physical abuse is not covered by any product warranty.

Call your homeowners Insurance agent. Very possable that your homeowners insurance could cover the damage.
LG has been known for opting to provide two digital inputs. I don't know if their smaller LCD's have this, though. I know Sony doesn't, Sharp stopped, Samsung *might* on their new ones...
Anyone else notice a rash of shatterd, scratched, fallen over displays here recently?

Sorry about the loss man, hope you get it all straightend out!
Home owners = no help. Warranty = no help. This definately falls under misuse/abuse type damage, nothing I know of will help foot the repair bill here. I'm currently waiting for a quote on a repair (or a determination if it can be repaired).

In the mean time I've been window shopping. What are the reputations of Samsung, Sharp, Philips, and Westinghouse (I assume an off shore brand under an assumed name?) LCDs these days? I also see Panasonic has a 37" plasma that is tempting...

Anhedonic...Considering what happened and the child showed remorse for his actions, lets just say I exercised tremendous restraint!
Ahhh the joys of parenthood! I can personally GUARANTEE that at some *future* time in your life you will laugh about this, and hopefully you will do so with your then fully grown son, the same one who shattered your plasma screen.

I have a 2-year old (only child) and what happened to you is my worst(est) nightmare since I will soon be the owner of a brand new Pana 50-inch 600U!!

Best of luck to you ! ! !

BILL
Samsung and Sony LCDs share the same Panel, prodduced in a joint factory in Korea. So Samsung and Sony LCDs are pretty much the same except Sony has 2 Component Inputs and 1 HDMI, and Samsung has 1 Component and 2 HDMI.

Sony S2000 series = Samsung 51/52 series (51 is Black, 52 is White)

Sony XBR series = Samsung 92 series

Last years Samsungs had a bad rep for DNIe (image processing), which is still present, but seems to be much improved on this years models 41, 51/52, and 92 series. Haven't seen any complaints about DNIe on the new models.

I saw the Samsung 4092 at BestBuy the other day and it looked incredible, easily equivalent to the Sony 40XBR.
texneus -- take some consolation from the fact that your loss is educating other parents

Now, I'm going to mount my new flat screen higher on the wall than I had planned to!

Check the T&C of the credit card that was used to make this purchase. Some of the cards have wording that will cover accidental breakage. However, there are some exclusions in the fine print pertaining to electronic products on certain credit cards so you really have to read the T&C before calling..
Good idea on the credit card benefits. Close, but no cigar. My card automatically doubles the mfr warrenty, (but does not provide any extra coverages). My card also has purchase protection that would have covered this if it happened within 90 days of purchase (I'm four months too late...drat).
P.S. Can anyone recommend a Hitachi service center in the Dallas-Ft. Worth-Denton area? The place I contacted said "it will take a little research", but they've been working on a ballpark quote two days now...

I suppose this happens way too often. Dont people have play rooms for their rugrats? I suggest taking precautions against this but noone ever seems to get it. Of course the kid didnt mean it....I know that! It's just that...it could be prevented.

Here's my suggestions and exactly what I did:

- Finish off at least part of the basement and make it entirely for the kids. Give them a good TV, fun toys, video game set, etc, etc. Make this playroom MORE attractive than the living room. Thats the key. My kids dont even CARE about the upstairs now...they have their own little domain!

- If this is unfeasable then you simply MUST protect the TV somehow. How about not allowing them to play in the TV watching area? Thats a start!

I know I'm gonna sound like a meanie...but I didnt spend two grand so the monkeys can play kickball in the house.....

Either prevent it...or roll the dice.... no other choice my friends! ;)

Try selling the broken unit for parts to those who are interested. Repairing a broken LCD panel is pretty much out of the question even if you do the repair yourself.

The problem is buying a single LCD replacement panel can cost hundreds of dollars more than the original television. Its really not worth the trouble.. been there, done that.

Hell, YOU must've been SMASHED fer letting that sorta thing happen!

Not to mention thinking that ANY kinda warranty's gonna cover somethin' like that for you!

Looks like you have NO other option other than to absorb the loss and buy a brand new TV that comes with a bullet-proof screen or somethin'!

Child arse-whipping not included... MWU-HAHA!!!

Next time, hang it HIGH up on the wall where these little monsters can't reach it!
