Lcd tv for gaming, what to buy?

2371 Views 55 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Woodrow
Alright, so I'm looking to buy a lcd tv. I want something cheap, preferabley under 1000 Canadian. I want decent quality, and HDMI is a plus for me. I'm expecting 720p, not something that just has 1080i. Size is not a major factor for me, I can deal with anything as small as 23 inches. I'm also looking to preferabley buy from a store where returning is an ease like bestbuy or futureshop. A high contrast ratio is also important (the samsungs look so beautiful). This may not be used for high definition cable television, but it'de be a plus for it to have a decent tuner.

It will be used with my 360, xbox (modded with XBMC if your curious why i'm still using it), gamecube, and probably ps3 in the future, which is why hdmi is preferred. I wouldn't mind hooking my computer up to it to get MCE, but I only have one vga port on my rig (X800XL, dvi is used by 2005fpw.)

I'm also looking for another item. I have z-5500's, and many of you know they only have 1 optical and coaxial port. I'm looking for a cheap solution (Under 150 dollars), to split this and get several extra connections. Extra component connections would be ideal too. Right now my 360 is hooked up to my 2005fpw and it's stretching it, something which is really bugging me. Btw, thougths on good optical cables / component cables is also appreciated. Right now I have a monster optical cable, which was pretty expensive. I don't think that optical is affected by what brand cable you use like coaxial.

All items must be from Canadian retailers, and I would prefer to pick these items up in the store rather then order online. I can possibly flex though depending on the stores policy if you order online (I.E. Bestbuys cool, no restocking charge.)

Thanks in advance guys.

BTW, the only thing holding me back a bit from the samsung is the whole DNIE thing. (I'm really a total HT noob, which is why I didn't register here earlier. In a years time or so I will be looking at mid-to high end headphones and speakers, so don't pick on me for these logitechs. This room i'm in now is small and I can hardly even fit bookshelf speakers in here. I will be moving in the basement later.)

Btw, if you have an hdtv cable box, can you use coax or optical to get digital sound? Or must you use analogue connections to get sound?
If you can take a look at the HP LC3700N at Bestbuy.ca. They have a great price on it. I picked one up last week. Its basicly a Sharp with HP clothing. Cheaper then the current 37" Sharp and has more features like the older Sharps. It has all the conections (DVI and HDMI but no VGA) of the older Sharps but with the newer 12ms panel. It also has CMS which is missing on a lot of the newer Sharps. Its piano black with removable speakers. Great PQ. Theres a setting thread here that gives a great pic. I used the rec settings and its great.
Sales off, but it was way too big for me anyway. I think it was over my price range by quite a bit too.

I'm even willing to go for a tube HD now, only fear is that those don't offer 720p. I just want my 360 to look nice and dvd's to look decent too (I'm willing to buy an hdmi dvd player or whatever.)

I think 26-27 inches is my max, I'm really clogged for space in my room. Size means almost nothing to me, I'm all for quality. I'de jump for the sony right now if I had enough money, but I don't. Plus, my speakers atm are a bit cheap to spend a lot on a display I think. This is just for pure gaming in my room, nothing more.
Sorry didnt see the price limit. You can take a look at the Viewsonic N2750W at Costco. Its less then the $1000 you want to spend. I use the Viewsonic as my computer monitor. My has 1280x720 rez but there is some uncertaincy since it seems that the newer versions are 1366x768 and may not map correctly with PC. But the TV scaler will format it for 720p source, but it will not be 1:1 mapping to native rez if the newer panels are indeed 1366x768. But you can try at Costco and return if you dont like it. With Costco Canada you only get a 30 day return and 1 year Costco warrantee. The only probm for you maybe that the Viewsonic does not have HDMI, but has VGA and DVI plus all the other norm TV connections,
Saw this one earlier, the no hdmi kind of scared me, I want to be able to use the ps3 with this, seeing it's mainly going to be used for gaming.

How is your computer working out with it? I've heard hdmi to dvi cables ruin the picture, and VGA is the best for tv to computer.
Wait, which viewsonic are you speaking of? Costco canada has only one I think for $$$ (has hdmi though.)

The N2750 doesn't exist at costco Canada's website.

EDIT>>

mod note: no price other than MSRP, thanks
Kolin Syntax LCD great on games and movies and overall..Super cheap to picked up a 32" for the same price of a CRT...Superb warranty as well, looks great w/ the 360...I have even played the regular NES Super Mario game on it....Mario never looked so beautiful in widescreen....

Although if you have the space for a CRT you can pick up a 27"-30" set for anywhere between $499.99-599.99...Circuit City has an awesome Panasonic 26" set for under $400.00..It has a TON of features and I think is 1080i not sure though it also comes with HDMI ports so that is a perk...
Spink, I've read of some people with problems using the crts' with there 360 with 1080i.

I'm still open though, got a link to these lcd's your talking about (Pm me it)? I doubt I can find what you suggested in a Canadian retail store though (The tubes, yes, not the other though.)

I'm in the same boat Jagwire, my budget is around 1500 and below (hopefully below) and I'm looking for an 32 inch LCD. I was wondering if anyone knew what the cut off was for bad/good response time/refresh rates for these kinds of TV's. I've heard around 16ms and below but I was wondering if anyone knew what it was more specifically. Good luck

16ms is the cut off...A lot of the newer models especially the 05 ones have slashed the response time in half...A lot of the sets are around 8ms now I believe, even the lower end ones....

Check out http://www.syntaxgroups.com on the Kolin series...A lot of the stores are carrying the Olevias but not the Kolin....But Kolin is a solid name overseas and is a high quality product...I own the DLT-3212M model and it is superb...Im not sure if you can find these in any stores yet but you can definately order them online an awesome price...Just search them...
response times are sometimes fuggy. It is dependent on how its measured. EG: The Viewsonic is grey to grey with 8ms and the Sharps are measured from black to off then to black 12ms. So the numbers are meaning full only if you know how they are used.
Spinksjinx/Tinker, thanks for the info, I know it may be asking a lot but do you know some fair budget priced ones that measure well either gray/gray or black/black. Or possibiliy a webpage i can look at that can show me some more info on what brands measure black and which measure by grey. Either way, thanks for the info

Syntax series-Search online just about every place carries them

Protron-Have heard some decent reviews on these models

Hisense-Decent lower end...

Stay away from iLO though....Samsung/Viewsonic makes some of the best IMO....

Their are many others but the thing is these low end models carry a tag considerably close to higher end models so you may want to go that route....I know I wouldnt have bought the Kolin Syntax brand if the price was before the rebate but I got a deal on my that just couldnt be passed up...I cant openly discuss the price on the forum but I got a 32" lcd very cheap...7 Benjamin Franklins stood in the line to get my set.....

For your price range you could get a subpar LCD HDTV or kick arse CRT HDTV.. It's your call..

Thank you so much, this is just the insight I was hoping to find here.

CRT HDTV is fine, as long as it does the trick for gaming. What's your recommendation? I was looking at a Toshiba 26HF85C, but a quick google came up with people having trouble using it with there 360. I have the vga cables for the 360 already and some have reported that vga works better for the 360, atleast for the samsung lcd's. Vga is a plus seeing I could hook it up to my computer and use it as a Media Center.

Btw, I know a lot of crt's and regular tv's are no way near as bright as some nice lcd tv's. I have seen some sony crt computer monitors that look really bright though. Do the CRT high defs have brightness too?

Also, I'de probably prefer a CRT because i'm actually wanting to use up some space (I know, weird, but I have junk and stupid stuff in the place where it will be.) I don't want anything big though, like 26-27 inch maybe max, 30 is probably the most I can push. I'de like under 1k Canadian though.

Kbi, I see you have Z-680s. I have 5500's. What do you recommend for splitting the optical connection? I saw at futureshop this selecter thing. Joytech AV Control Center V2 or something. I can deal with anything under 150, others have recommended me get a reciever with the same decoder as my speakers decoder, but this would probably be more expensive and offer no benefitis.

Oh, and if your thinking something is weird with my whole size description, it's simple. I don't have a lot of width for something really big in inches, but I have enough depths for a smaller CRT (Under 30 inches I think.) Are the new Widescreen crt's smaller in depth than the older crt's from like 2-3 years ago that were flat panel? I have a SDTV in my den which is 32 or 36 inches and pretty large in depth, but it's not widescreen.

P.S. I haven't seen many high def crt's at BB or FS, maybe 2-3 on each of there sites in my size range.

Just a little over your price range but one of the slimest CRT widescreen TVs i'd seen

BTW you do know that there is a possiblity of burn in with CRTs
