I am running a Sony 1292Q with only 150 hours on 106' screen.

My current processor is an HTPC 2.4g with a Radeon 9800xt and the picture looks great running at 1704X960. Theater Tek 2.0 and power-strip is my software.

What will be the big improvement using the Leeza HD and a modifed Panasonic SDI-982. I'm looking to run 1080p and how much difference will that mode make on DVD verses using my Htpc.

Your insight means alot when thinking of shelling out $3000.00 for new processing.

Thanks Greg

I think the HD LEEZA will perform better at the same res you're using with your HTPC (960P).

it's hard to say how much of an improvement you'll have. Will you be using it for HD or SD (or both) and not just DVDs?

Do you experience any artifacts or issues with your current configuration?

Keep in mind that convinience is a big part of moving from HTPCs to video processors. If you feel comfortable with HTPCs, there's no reason to move to dedicated processors (the added PQ value is probably not worth the investment of the paradigm shift).

A lot of us, here at least, feel that video processors are alot more user friendly and comfortable (particularly with respect to Wife Acceptance Factor).

Greg..

I have a 1292 running at 1440 x 960..960P is the sweet spot for this CRT - it will certainly do 1080P but the picture looks better at 960P..

I have gone from a scaler to a HTPC and back to a scaler in this sequence:

1-Extron scaler

2-HtPC with TT 1.5 with ATI 9000 and MP-1 mod..

3-HTpc with SDI Panny and Holo3D I then II card

4-Crystalio 2300 scaler

I had all sorts of problems with TT 1.5 - microstutters and no DTS.. The Holo card was very stable but I had problems getting the HD-Aux card to work for my Hdef satellite..I ended up running the Hdef satellite directly into a 2nd input on the 1292..

The best image so far without question is the Crystalio - I would expect the HD Leeza to be very comparable..

Both Std and Hi def satellite look better running thru the scaler..

Unless something dramatic (like Teranex ) happens in the PC world, I'm sticking with a scaler..

:) I am currently not having any issues with the HTPC but you hit it right on the head with the wife factor!!!

I want to thank you for the reply and I just ordered the leeza and SDI unit.

My 1292 looks best at the 1704x960p at 60hz for some reason and I to have went from Faroudja Nrs to HTPC. In my findings the HTPC has a better picture than the Faroudja. So now I'm looking forward to the Leeza

and simplification factor for the family!

If anyone is in the Fort Wayne, Indiana region I do need my 1292 calibrated with the Leeza and Sdi dvd player.

Thanks

I have never tried 1704 but use 1440 as it is twice 720 x 480 - the resolution of DVD..

I also use 59.94 hz which I prefer over 71.928..the 59.94 has a bit more punch and it looks just as smooth as 71.928..

Please report back when you have been using the Leeza for a bit to see what your thoughts are compared to your HTPC..

Just got the Hd Leeza and panasonic SDI and the picture is incredible. No comparison with HTPC. Can't believe I waited this long to buy the Leeza Hd.

1292 has never looked so good and can't wait for Ken Whitcomb to bring it home the rest of the way.

Unless things have changed lately, you don't really have much choice but to use 60hz with the HDL. I don't think that 72Hz ever really worked. I haven't tried it lately, but it didn't traditionally work.

Greg,

I'm actually working with KDS on the new firmware for the HD Leeza which will allow ISF calibration through the Leezas RS-232 port- so far, with the limited testing that I've done, you can at least correct for the color shift that the Leeza has inherently. For those of you that have HD Leezas and CRTs, I'm sure you've seen this- the processor seems to skew the colorimetry toward green- WE WILL BE ABLE TO FIX THAT. Once I've completed my testing, the values that I come up with will become the default for the Leeza- which will make it a much more accurate scaler.

Greg, I live in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, I've never been to Fort Wayne- but depending on your calibration budget, I might be able to help you out.

Greg,

I have used the HD Leeza at 1080p and the biggest difference

compared to the HTPC is the lack of micro stutters during pans.Stutters

get worse as the output resolution increases.

I am quite sensitive to this, so it was a worthwhile improvement .

PQwise it is about the same as the HTPC for Film based DVD material

but shows a marked reduction in combing for video based material.

My basis of comparison is a 2.4G P4 running a Radeon 9700 using

WindDVD 6 and PowerDVD 5. I have not tried the latest version

of the TT software.

Fully agree about the previous ease of use comments.

Why does 1080p look better on my 1292 than 960p? When I use 960p on the Leeza the picture looks recessed and colors not as accurate.

In 1080p I get a more 3d picture and there is plenty off punch and the colors seem to be more natural. Could it be that my Da-lite 1.3 was the problem. The whites sure seemed be almost slight yellow in tint!

Ever since I switched to the gator foam screen 1080p and never looked so good. Better white levels and contrast with no hot spotting. I also noticed that almost all the streaking has gone away from the 1292.

Does anyone have any suggestions to improve on my picture? The search for the video grail continues!
