I have a source for cable by the large spool but dont know about terminating. is this somthing that is cost prohibitive? what is the best source for long optical cables?

I would be very surprised if you could get a signal lock over toslink at 11m. I think the max length in the toslink spec is 10m, and I doubt many systems will accomplish that.

I don't know of any way to home-brew fiber optic cables.

If you're going to give it a try, be sure to get a glass fiber cable. That will be your best bet to go that distance.

It will probably be cheaper to get another computer!
