Lens Shift Question

257 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Uther
So, is the desire to have lens shift in a projector that one could always have the picture aligned with either the top or bottom of the screen? My guess is this is important in that you would only have to mask three sides of the image and you would have the ability to make minute adjustment to align the picture with the screen?

Uther,

Shifting doesn't change the masking requirement.

It just shifts the relative position of the projector with respect to the screen - so that you can get it out of the

way.

Imagine a PJ with zero offset - the PJ would have to be centered with the screen - which would put it in the way.

That's why most PJs have a 50% offset - puts the projector at the top of the screen, out of the way.

I understand what lens shift does, I'm trying to see if there is an application to masking. Since masking is, in essence, a trick to raise perceived CR of the image, if you were able to use lens shift to align the picture with the bottom of the screen, I can forsee this eliminating the need for a bottom mask assuming you have some sort of dark material or dark painted wall behind the screen, but I am not 100% certain about this and was hoping someone that has tried this could verify the results.
Uther,

That would move the image off the bottom of the screen certainly.

What would you do with the unused white portion at the top of the screen though?

Besides, you could potentially be using the Lens shift quite frequently and if it isn't remote controlled it would be a PITA.

John, I'm thinking in terms of 1.85 and 2.35 AR materials projected on a 1.78 screen. Of course moving 1.78 material on a 1.78 AR screen would move it off of the screen. WRT the white space at top, my initial post indicated masking on three sides, so the top would be masked. WRT your last point, I believe there are already several projectors with lens shift on the remote.
