for Christmas my fiance got a 20" LG 20LS7D. It looks good except for when watching DVDs with really dark scenes. When the screen is very dark the brightness of the display alternates from really dark to a washed out grey look.

I havent noticed it with SD or HDTV, but I dont think I have had a similarly dark image to watch.

I dont know what you call this, but is there any way to fix it.

Try turning off XD color and XD Contrast. Menu/Picture/XD set to manual and XD settings Off/Off/On.

thanks. I'll try that, I take it you have this TV.

anyone know what this phenomenon is called. I had no idea what to search for.

Not that particular one, I have the LG 52LB5D, but they both have the XD engine. It has something to do with the automatic setting of the XD contrast.

that didn't seem to work I set the XD settings to off/off/on, and then even set them to off/off/off. Could there be another setting that is the culprit?

Try these settings:

Picture mode: User 1 (assuming you have this)

Contrast 90

Brightness 45

Color 40

Sharpness 70

Tint 0

Back light 30
