I am delighted to report that LG auto calibration is being introduced at CES 2018. Thanks to a partnership with Portrait Displays, all 2018 LG OLED and Super UHD TVs can now be calibrated automatically using the industry-standard CalMan calibration software by SpectraCal, which is part of Portrait Displays.

LG auto calibration allows CalMan to directly access the TVs' internal 3D look-up tables (LUTs), which allows very precise adjustments to the color performance. According to Tyler Pruitt, Technical Liaison at Portrait Displays, "When you need a display to be extremely accurate, the usual solution is to add a 3D LUT box to the video chain. The 3D LUT box corrects minor nonlinearities that the display's controls alone won't correct."

Image processors with 3D LUTs are employed by home-theater videophiles as well as studio-industry professionals, but they cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. "With the 2018 LG premium televisions, the internal 3D LUTs are available to CalMan," Tyler says. "This eliminates the need for an external LUT box."

Even better, LG auto calibration using CalMan AutoCal calibrates standard dynamic range (SDR), HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG. What would take a trained calibrator hours to complete can now be done in minutes.

Here's a screen shot of the LG AutoCal workflow doing its thing.

According to Martin Fishman, co-CEO of Portrait Displays, "You simply connect CalMan on your computer to the LG television using Wi-Fi or Ethernet and let CalMan's AutoCal make your picture perfect. The LG TVs with CalMan AutoCal demolish the distinction between the professional reference monitor and the consumer television. You can sit at home and see exactly what the director of the movie was intending."

Tim Alessi, LG's senior director of product marketing, is equally enthusiastic. "The addition of the world's leading auto-calibration software from Portrait Displays to our 2018 LG OLED and Super UHD TV models will greatly streamline the process for professional calibrators and ensure that consumers will be able to enjoy the full potential of their LG OLED or Super UHD television."

LG auto calibration is being demonstrated at CES 2018 using a pre-release version of CalMan with this feature, which is already available for many Samsung TVs. The LG-enabled software—which includes the home-enthusiast and professional versions—is scheduled to ship at the same time as the 2018 LG OLED and Super UHD TVs. I'm super-excited by this development, and I hope it encourages other TV manufacturers to follow suit, making it easy for more consumers to see video exactly as the content creators intended.
