hello guys,

i purchased this unit a while ago from a canadian retailer. this unit has a february 2004 built date. does it mean that it will still upcovert to 1080i thru component? how would you know whether it is 1080i or just 480p? they said that those who have a built date after june 2004 will no longer upconvert 1080i thru component because of a newer firmware. how will you verify this?

the manual says: "The selected resolution and output resolution may be

different during playing back a DVD which copy protection signals are recorded. e.g., The ouput resolution is changed to 480p automatically

even though the selected resolution is 1080i.
" does it mean that when you press info or display in your tv it will say 480p regardless you selected 1080i? how will you know that this is happening? can someone explain to me this?

i just wanted to make sure that i'm getting 1080i thru component and NOT 480p. this is the reason why i bought this unit. sorry for so many questions but just need to be clarified.

thanks.

Suggest that you do a search for "7832".

See these threads for a lot more info on the Zenith 318 (AKA LG 7832 in Canada):

Your Feb 2004 build will definately upconvert all your DVDs to 1080i via component. While the disc is stopped, you press the upconvert button on the player several times until the display reads "1080i." I bought a July 2004 build of the LG 7832, only about half of the 15 DVDs I tried were upconvertible to 1080i via component....the remaining half got bounced back to 480p. Problematic DVDs included: LOTR: FOTR, Star Wars I&II, Master & Commander, Matrix, Army of Darkness and Spiderman.

If you check your display, it would somehow (via a button on the remote or TV) tell you what rez it's displaying. My X1 does this easily. The LG 7832 would also tell you what rez immediately after you press the upconvert button....it lets you know if the rez is downconverted back to 480p too.

thanks davidy for your response.

how will you know if the rez was downconverted back to 480p? will it flicker, or the dvd will not play? what are the signs that will tell you that the rez was downconverted from 1080i back to 480p?

i just bought this a while ago and still debating whether to keep this or return it. i'm comparing this with my sony dvp-ns575? is this lg worth to keep than my sony?

When upconversion doesn't work properly (i.e. won't upconvert), the player's displays "480p". My X1 would also show that the rez is also "480p."

Older builds like Feb 2004 are harder to find nowadays. It appears that dealers like FS are getting July 2004 or newer builds as they restock.

If your TV is capable of 1080i and doesn't have DVI (ie. component only), then there are not many choices available....just either the Momitsu or the Zenith 318/LG 7832. I now have replaced my July 2004 build with a Nov 2003 one and have been very happy watching all my DVDs at 1080i....no going back to 480p if I can help it. Others have noted that the LG 7832 doesn't do 480p very well....especially when compared with a top notch player like the discontinued Panasonic RP82 or it's siblings.

I am not familar with your Sony 575. I was using a Malata 996 prior to the LG 7832. So far, like many Zenith 318/LG 7832 owners, I have been very pleased with the player....slight cropping issue, no observed macroblocking.

I think that you have to compare the PQ of your Sony 575 at 480p vs. the LG 7832 at 1080i (the LG 7832 at 480p isn't that good). I would be very surprised if the LG didn't win out between the two though.

Read at the email to me by LG Representative when I ask them about upconversion:

"Hi, depends how the DVD is formatted. If the setting is on 1080i and you'll play the DVD which is 480p recorded the unit will play it at 480p, but if the DVD is recorded at 1080i the unit will play it at 1080i. Thank you."

It doesn't make any sense to me as all of the DVD's out in the market are recorded at 480p. Does it mean that regardless we selected 1080i in the unit, the output would still be 480p so when pressing display on tv it should show 480p and not 1080i, am I right? But when you press display/info on your TV and shows 1080i does it really mean that the output rez is 1080i? How will you know that the unit downconverts you from 1080i to 480p?

Your LG rep is talking gibberish...just like my personal experience when they were trying to trouble shoot my July 2004 build and saying that my problematic DVDs were from another region....bulderdash.

I understand that all DVDs are recorded at 480...interlaced rather than progressive (so I am told). I know that my X1 tells me exactly what rez the player puts....when the player upconverts to 1080i, the X1 reports it as 1080. When the player plays at 480p, the X1 reports it as 480. The display on the DVD player displays the rez too.

See the Zenith 318 FAQ thread for the region free hack. I haven't tried it out yet.

Thanks, Dave.

That's what I thought. Most of the DVD's out there are recorded on 480i and the email response doesn't make any sense to me. Anyway, I'll probably keep this unit and sell my Sony DVP-NS575. It will be VERY difficult to find HD-DVD player nowadays that will pass thru component.

By the way, are you from Lower Mainland?

What TV are you using? I have a Panasonic 47 RPTV that locks into Full Mode when displaying 1080i. So as long as I can't change the aspect ratio then I know its in 1080i mode.

No. But I use to live there when I was attending school. I only visit Vancouver once in awhile these days.

I have the Samsung 47" widescreen HCL473W. I don't know if my tv locks into full mode. But it has a display button and tells me the output rez. What does it mean by Full Mode?

Is DVE (Digital Video Essential) necessary to calibrate RPTV like my Sammy 47" RPTV? Or this is only good for plasma TV? Where can I get this here in Canada?

I just got my LG DV7832NXC back from repair and was wondering if the upconverion rate should be displayed when I hit the upconvert button because I don't know where it is at when I press the button. Also the Digital audio cable, does it not "click" into place when inserted because it falls out easily when moving my system. It is new out of the box like this and just returned the same.
