Have you seen the big thread for this player? Its upconversion over HDMI is not all that good so your findings are in line with what others have seen. I had it for a few days but I checked it for upconversion over component (afer applying a hack via its remote control). I found its picture too soft for my liking.

LG LDA-511 picture quality is horrible!
I got a LG LDA-511, and hooked it up to my samsung LN-S3252D with an HDMI cable, and put the settings to 16x9 on the LG, and 1080i through HDMI. The quality is terrible.
My 360 upconverts and looks way better than the LDA-511. Also i've seen a few other upconverting dvd players, and they look much nicer. I compared it on the same display with same cable to a RCA DRC257N and the RCA looked amazing...the LG, horrible.
Any thoughts on this? is this normal? am I doing something wrong? or is the LG just a really bad upconverting player?
