LG OLED - C9PUA 4K UHD TV vs Samsung Q900 8K QLED

4258 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  soi_01
Hi, I need to replace my 14 y/o Pioneer plasma TV. I've narrowed my selection to LG C9PUA 4K 55"
or a Samsung Q900 8K QLED 55". Sales guys tell at 10' or 11' viewing distance 55" 8K won't make difference. Is that true?
Also, a lot of viewing will be at a significant side angle.
The LG C9PUA 4K 55" gets terrific reviews but I cannot find reviews that compare the two TVs against each other.

Major concern: Samsung appliances get terrific commercial reviews but a lot horrible costumer reviews when reliability is factored into the review.

What do you guys think?

Going to cross post this message in the QLED forum.

Thanks

At 55",definitely grab the cheaper C9 unless your viewing habits put you at high risk of burn in.

LG C9 is a better choice for someone coming from plasma in my opinion. Side angle view is better on OLED, 8k is irrevelant at this point. Nothing really to view and at 55” is pretty much pointless, you need at least 75” or bigger to really see the benefit of increased resolution.

The Samsung "QLED" is marketing BS for an LED. Side angle viewing will suffer, whereas it's excellent with all OLEDs. Black levels and contrast will also be better with an OLED (which should be important to you coming from a plasma). And as others have said, 8k on a 55" display is pointless - you won't be able to see any difference between 4k and 8k at that size. Go for the OLED.

to say you cant see a difference from 8k to 4k is not fair. this link may prove helpful. https://carltonbale.com/home-theater/home-theater-calculator/

they say the human eye can see up to 570+ megapixels....so 8k is really nothing...but still not fair.
to say you cant see a difference from 8k to 4k is not fair.
What we're saying is that you won't see a difference between 4k and 8k 55" displays from 10-11' away.

agreed, if sitting that far away I would want 75in plus tv's.
if I edited photography like I do, resolution is always welcome since i am taking pics at 24mp+....pixel peeping :)

And "LED" is marketing BS for LCD. Coming from a plasma there was no way I'd go LCD.

Thanks all for the very very helpful replies. I have viewed the 65" QLED - OLED models side by side but can't find a store that has both 55" models on display.
I did notice the OLED has much better side angle viewing. I do like the Samsung power/switch box setup. makes sense to me. I'm going to mount the 55" on a narrow bar. The OLED has a much sturdier base.

the video in one of the replies was very helpful and well done as was the link: https://www.rtings.com/tv/tools/comp...&threshold=0.1[/url]
The viewing distance calculator was also helpful.

It appears I won't need my LG sound bar w/ the LG C9 55"

Screen brightness is not an issue in the TV room.

Next year several mfgs are producing QLED TVs. Go figure. Maybe they're cheap to produce

I'm cutting the cable cord w/ xfinity TV. Going to use OTA, Amazon prime and probably roku. A buddy uses amazon prime & youtube and likes the setup. Don't know if he gets local channels. I'm an HBO fan but PO w/ the edited movies to fit time slots. Any provider show full length unedited movies? I suspect I should be asking these questions in another thread.

Thanks again,

Mike
