LG or Toshiba

5199 Views 14 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  racton1
I am curently considering these two LCD televisions. The Toshiba 42HL57 or LG 42LC7D. BB has a trade in your old tv sale on right now. The Toshiba would be 899. The LG would be 1099. I think these are both good prices but are these descent LCD's. Also does the LG 2 year manufacturers warranty a big deal. Most other manufactures are 1 year. If I listen to the sales person at BB these warrantys are worthless. They claim the only worth while plan is their service plan. Any input would be appreciated as this is my 1st LCD purchase. Thanks.

Is there some information online about that program?
Yes but I am in Canada. So its on BB canadian website
I played around with both those TVs at the local CC a few days back. I'm currently just about ready to purchase a set, and I thought that the LG had a superior picture than the Toshiba. I played with the settings on both alot, and I just couldn't quite get the same detail or depth to the picture on the Toshiba that I could get out of the LG. Both these sets were right next to each other in the store, so ambient lighting conditions were exactly the same. I also liked the LG menu layout better than the Toshiba. jmo...

I'll most likely be buying the LG this evening.

I had the same confusion as you. Toshiba is not bad in pic qlty but for more features and better qlty I stuck to LGwithout burning a hole in my pocket.

Just purchased the Lg 42 inch LBX model with the 120 hz feature in Best buy which came to 1699 plus tax with the tube trade in. The guy there also threw in a monster cable for free. and LG also has a 2 yr parts and labor warranty which in my opinion is extra insurance.

I actually wanted a 46 inch without the 120 hz true motion feature, but chose a smaller screen size with a newer technology for the same price.

Good luck with your purchase.

Just picked up a LG 47LC7DF last night at CC. ($1499 on a price match for a BB ad) Due to have my satellite upgraded to HD on Sunday. Unit looked very good on standard DVD player(will be upgrading soon to an upconverting 1080p dvd), and fairly ok on sd satellite signal. Looking forward to that HD DVR on Sunday, as I am sure that will improve things a lot.

Anyways, after setting the unit up, and playing with it for about an hour....I figured, ok, looks good.....so I started pulling off all the protective saran wrap type stuff that's all over the plastic and such to protect it from scratches......and low and behold....big crack in the bezel just under the features sticker. Was I ever bummed. I wondered why the stand was already attached to the screen when I took it out of the box.....must have been a return, and not exactly "brand new".

Fortunately, Circuit City has no problem taking it back. They told me to just bring it back and they'll swap it for another new unit. (Hope it's really new this time......lol)

Anyways, will write more after I get the HD satellite upgrade on Sunday.

5 free DVDs (exp. 2/28/08)
Thanks for the links! The price is almost worth going for it, even if blu-ray becomes the new standard, especially with the free 5 disc offer.

And how much is 'their service plan'? What does it cover? Can you see a copy of it, read the fine print, and then read the really fine print.

Do you know how much profit they make on these service plans?

I my opinion they are not worth it.

I know its 239 for 2 year or 279 for 4 years. I tend to agree that its not worth it. Why would someone buy the 2 year when the manufacture covers 2 years? Their plan is not for the manufacture 2 plus 2. Its a 2 year total coverage time. seemed like a scam to me. Thanks for your input.
Thats a great price. Too bad we don't have that offer at our BB in Canada. The 42" I was looking at is only $100 less than what you paid. Thanks
Just got DISH HD enabled for my new LG 47LC7DF. (Yup, got another at CC with no cracked bezel….tv in perfect condition this time, and the wife and I looked it over with a fine tooth comb…..lol)

WOW. Just plain jaw dropping WOW.

Even the presets are pretty good, although the Dynamic setting would eventually burn through one’s retinas, I’m sure……lol.

I played with the user configurable settings for over an hour, and have come very close to a picture that matches my personal preferences. Again……WOW.

Here’s my newbie take on the set, so far.

Pros:

Outstanding user configurable picture when on HDMI. Excellent black levels, and all the other settings make for a very adjustable picture according to personal user preferences. I have looked hard for banding…..any banding or uniformity problems at all, and I can find none at all, so far. The picture is absolutely stunning, with incredible depth, contrast, and clarity. I was watching an HD show this afternoon that was about some base jumpers doing the Snake River Canyon bridge, and it was just incredible to watch how the tv handled the huge variances in light, shadows, and colors that occurred in the cinematography of the jumps. Absolutely amazing.

Really good user saved settings for each different type of input. XD settings are a bit of a mystery to me so far, although they do seem to help significantly with the non HD signals. Imo, the XD is better left off for the true HD signals. One area that I need to play with a lot more.

Sound is actually quite good for such small speakers that are mounted underneath the front bezel. The surround sound was surprisingly good on certain channels.

Screen shows no reflections whatsoever. I even turned on lots of lights and brought lots of reflective elements into the room……absolutely no reflections on the screen itself.

The tv displays standard def progressive scan dvds quite nicely. I'm looking forward to getting an upconverting dvd player, but so far, my cheapo RCA progressive scan dvd player works quite well with the set. I'm sure high end videophiles would have some objections, but for the normal, average user, progressive scan dvds look quite good on the LG.

Cons:

Not many, and the ones I have are nitpicky.

Menu system is not quite as good as I originally thought. I still like it quite a bit, but there are times when you feel like you should have been able to accomplish the same task with one or two fewer button pushes.

When there is no picture displayed, and the screen is completely black, I can notice lighter areas at the corners. I have looked hard when a full HD picture is displayed, and I can see no color variances or light variances or uniformity issues at the corners, so this must be just something that occurs when a full black screen is displayed…..again, an extremely minor issue.

The shiny black plastic bezel is an absolute dust magnet, as I am sure is the same for all the other glossy black bezels of all the other flat panel displays out there. Plus, it reflects everything in the room, although, I did not notice it at all when the screen was on and displaying something…..so it’s pretty much a non issue, imo.

Wish the stand swiveled. Again….a very minor issue.

So that’s my take so far.

Also, I am really glad that I got the 47” instead of the 42”. When I first set it up in our home, we didn’t have a tv stand big enough for it, yet, so I had moved the coffee table over in front of our current tv stand, and set the LG up on that. It was only about 8’ from our couch, and was incredibly overpowering. I was thinking, oh crap, this set is too big. But after getting it on a stand that was close to the wall, and about 12’ from the couch, the display size is absolutely perfect. 42” would have left me wishing for a larger size at this distance from the couch.

In my opinion, this tv, at $1499, is as good as some of the sets that I looked at in the store, that cost a grand more. I’m really pleased with my purchase, and hopefully, in 5 or 10 years, I can say the same thing about it.

My apologies for being so wordy, and hope this review helped. Best of luck in your search for the ultimate widescreen.

I find myself in the same boat. After reluctantly pasing on an excellent Panasonic deal at Fry's I have turned to these two sets. I knew I liked the Toshiba, but the LG kind of blindsided me. I wasn't expecting to like it, but its picture spoke for itself. I was pleasantly surprised. I also really liked the remote having the brightness shortcut buttons. Menu system was a bit deep but I liked the UI. Although Toshibas ability to select the blue and green drive was nice. But we will see what I end up with. Unfortunately the WAF is a major deciding piece of the puzzle and budget maker.
Is there a big difference between the TVs mentioned in this thread and the 32" counterparts? Both 32" are on sale (Best Buy in Ontario), LG 32LC7D and Toshiba 32HL57 for the same price. I'm not sure which one of the two to go for... I'm guessing I'll be happy either way but this thread seems to be leaning towards the LG.

Thanks for the help. I'm relatively new to this whole TV buying business and could use a guiding hand
I have the Toshiba 32HL57 and the HD is excellant but I don't like how some of the SD programs look but that could be a trouble with E. I just wish that I had gotten it bigger! I dont know anything about the LG. I did look at the Panasonic, Samsung and briefly at the Sony in 32" sizes and I picked the Toshiba due to price and the Samsung wouldn't fit in my entertainment center.
