In general, are the fans that come with the Lian-Li cases noisy? I'm looking at the Lian-Li PC6100B or the PC69B cases. They include 2 front (80mm?) and 1 rear fans. I wonder whether these are noisy and are replaceable. Anyone with experience in Lian Li cases and their fans? Thanks in advance.

I have the PC60. The fans are pretty quiet, but I replaced all three with Vantec Stealth Fans (18dB), and now I can barely hear them. First thing to do is remove the fan cover from the rear fan. It causes a high pitch sound due to air being blocked. Removing it silenced it almost completely.

I'd also recommend getting a fan controller; I just bought a Vantec 4 fan controller for about $20 on eBay. The most offensive fan in my new system turned out to be the CPU fan as it is the smallest and has the highest blade speed. I took my CPU fan off the mobo controlled connection and put it on the Vantec but I'm keeping an eye on the CPU temp for the first few days. Another option for the CPU would be to get an adapter to allow the use of a larger diameter fan or to go to liquid cooling.

The TechTV channel just did a segment on building a low noise PC and you can get the details at techtv.com/thescreensavers . Yoshi, their resident mod expert, got his system down to under 18db (as measured by Dolby Labs in one of their sound rooms) by replacing the fans in the power supply, using a combination of dynamat and some kind of foam insulation, water cooling and an insulated cover for the entire face of the system.

Finally. A subject I know something about.

The stock fans (made by ADDA) with a lian-li case are a bit noisy but most lian-li come with a 3 speed fan controller. You could put them on the lowest setting to compensate.

If you want to replace them, so far I've had the most luck with Panaflo. They are really amazing. Go read the "cases & cooling" forum at amdmbforums.com and you will see nothing but praise for these fans. I replaced my ADDA with some U1A Panaflo fans. These are the most powerful fans they make (they also have L1A, M1A, H1A - low, medium, high). I put the fan controller on low and it's really nice and quiet.

Having said all that, the best way to cool and keep quiet is to get a case that takes 120mm fans (the lian-li cases take 80mm fans) and put a fan controller on them. I could go on forever on good cases for this purpose. Let me suggest the new Sonata by Antec. I don't have experience with it but it looks nice. I don't like the fact that the front intake 120mm fan is behind the hard drive cage but other than that it appears to be made for HT.

Hope that helps.

Thank you very much, guys.

I also looked at the Sonata. It looks like it has a door covering the external bays. Could this be annoying opening and closing it everytime?

I'm like the Lian Li in its clean layout and lots of drive bays. Another option is the Antec Fusion. I'm still waiting for that to make a final decision.

I don't think the door on the Sonata would be a problem but it's a personal thing. It's nice to be able to hide the drives (which don't always have matching colors to the case) to give it a clean look. It could be an issue if you swap discs several times a day.

The Fusion seems very nice. I'm not sure how well it would cool or be quiet. The big concern with cases like that is making sure your video card fits and it can handle a good heat sink fan combo.

I think CoolerMaster makes a case similar to the Fusion. Look for the ATC-610-GX1. CoolerMaster cases are very expensive though.

Just thought id throw my $0.2 into the fray...

In the past, i used to always stick with Panaflo's all over my case to keep the noise level down... However, someone pointed me to some fans they have over at SVC.com, called NMB Ultra Quiets.

I can honestly say that not only are these fans damn near silent, but they are CHEAP too!

$2.50 for one, 5/$11.00, 10/$18.50

and their tales are wrapped in a rubberized tube, i REALLY like these...

BTW, in case anyone is wondering, no i dont work for SVC :)

Just a long time lurker here, that finally decided to register :)
