During the Sony Strategic Meeting in Tokyo today, Sony announced a service that will allow PS3 owners to view daily world news interactively.

The system, billed under their Life with PlayStation brand, allows you to zoom around a virtual globe (not unlike the one in the [email protected] application) and gain world news from various cities. The service will allow later on for geo-tagged pictures to be viewed on the globe, and is part of a whole slew of non-game services Sony are planning for the future.

I don't own a Wii but apparently this is about the same as their News Channel. Seems like a cool idea to me. I hope you can set the globe to be your default background.

The Wii has 2 globes, one weather, one news.

This looks pretty much sweeter than the Wii one.

Graphically it looks better, yeah. I really like the Wii's interface for viewing news and weather, I hope this performs in a similar manner.

Great news,

Wonder if they've though of allowing blog interactivity. Be Kinda neat to bookmark blogs by city and be able to see cross trackbacks and move from city to city to view.

That'd be fantastic. A big RSS globe.

Since George hijacked my thread
(his is better anyway) I will repeat what i was saying before.

Does anyone think that the browser looks different, as if it is not the default NetFront browser.

I really hope they have a better one coming.

P.s. looks like the next few months will be good for the PS3, still hoping for Skype and flash v9.

It is probably a custom app, like the new store or [email protected]

Another brilliant innovation from Sony! What will they think of all by themselves next?

They've all copied each other dozens of times. Do you find this unusual?

Indeed. That's how the industry goes. Pretty much every industry. Should we ***** about everyone having analog sticks, too?

And to display on a TV. Where will the copying end?

Copying the Wii's features, but really it took them long enough. I know - blah blah, allocate resources, etc. - but this stuff and video downloads should have been in the system day one.

and when the Wii has the option to add a hard drive so I can store more than my 4 year old iPod shuffle can, please apologize for "copying" PS3's hard drive flexibility.

I never understood the appeal of elaborate weather services, but even on TV the weather channel I hear is one of the most watched stations. Maybe I don't get it because here in Los Angeles we don't really have weather variations.

BTW, the Atari 5200 was the first console to launch with analog sticks as standard back in 1982.

Yeah, weather channels are extremely useful in more varied climates, like myself in northern Minnesota. It's very handy in the winter to know if the roads are going to be icy or if you'll be driving home in a white-out blizzard. My city is on a big hill, so knowing the road conditions can mean the difference between risking a car accident or just riding the bus. Or staying in.

x2

Granted, I was living in ND most of my life so the question was more like, "Is it going to be an ice rink or not." No hills.

The question of whether it will be -20 or not though is a good one to have answered before you go outside.
