I have some programs I want to archive. I would like opinions on the future of vhs tape. How many years before I can no longer get a recorder to play the tapes I make. My Beta tape archive from 20 years ago is already in the trash since my recorder failed and there is no economical replacement.

You also have to worry about the lifespan of the video tape itself. From my librarian friends I understand that most consumer tapes begin to experience problems in as little as 7 years.

To some extent it depends on the quality of the original tape stock and how the tape has been stored. I recently copied several tapes of late 70s vintage to MiniDV format. I didn't experience any oxide shedding or excessive drop outs but the tapes were stored in a low humidity, cool environment for the last 20+ years.
