As the title says, I need a light switch (normal looking switch) that can control a light, lightbox, or set of lights that it is not wired to. I can provide power to the light switch itself, and power to the lighting, but cannot connect them.

Any thoughts?

I have purchased an older home that is timber frame construction, and there is no way to really wire lighting after the fact, and this house happens to have some less ideal lighting in its current state.

Hoping to add a bunch of these that are wirelessly linked together and can be programmed via a base station/app/etc, so a holistic home automation system with components that fit the above description would be great.

Z-wave is a great way to do this for you, but like Insteon products, you will need a neutral at the remote switchbox. You could wire in an Aeon Labs Micro Switch at the light fixture, then just associate a z-wave remote controller wall switch such as a Model WT00Z from Linear with the micro switch using a Minimote Controller.

This would work anywhere you have a neutral for the wall controller, and where you don't just use a battery operated one such as the GE 45631 .

then later if you want, you can get a Veralite to control everything, locally, remotely and via your smartphone iPhone or Android.
