In general, are the line doublers that major tv manufacturers put in their HD monitors the same as those in their HD set-top boxes from the same model year or are they better in the tv monitors? If a set-top box is from a later model year, can its line doubler be used, bypassing the one in the tv monitor?

No general answer can be given. The release dates of STBs and TVs are usually staggered and different scaler chipsets may be used. In many TVs there is no true bypass of the internal scaler; e.g. many Sony CRT sets always scale 480p sources to 960i or 540p/1080i. Fixed-pixel sets rarely permit scaler bypass.


One should always try the different connection setups available with the gear at hand, to determine the best performer. Every setup will need to be calibrated for most accurate picture before a winner can be declared. Every setup will likely excel in some performance parameters and fall short in others.
