I'm looking for a singal amplifier that would achieve the following. I'm trying to route the output from 6 sources to both a home theater receiver AND a multizone amplifier/controller for whole house audio. Instead of using a simple RCA "Y" and losing half the signal strength in the process, I was hoping to find a line level signal boosting device that also acts as a splitter.

Anyone know of anything that might work? Is it even necessary?

Radio Shack.

And yes, it is better to use one of these

catalog # 15-1172 ,

part # 15-1172

Audio won't notice so much, but video will.

Depending on the equipment you're using, you may need to use a buffered y-adapter rather than just a standard y-adapter for sharing the audio source components. Some receivers short to ground when turned off. When that happens, if one amp is running while the other is turned off and shorted to ground, then the audio signal to the active receiver will sound badly distorted. If you do need a buffered y-adapter, Audioplex makes them.
